August 25, 2022It Pays To Be Ignorant - What is a Bargain Sale? Aug. 30, 1946 - AFRSA very popular show on this podcast... with a rather "catchy" title. The title almost kept the show from ever going on the air. Networks thought it was too insulting. WOR in NYC took a chance and the show was a success that ran 11 years on Mutual, CBS, and NBC - 1942-51. It was especially popular with our troops overseas during WWII and thus was broadcast over the Armed Forces Radio Service who also managed to keep the transcription disks in good shape so that we can enjoy the show even today. Oh, and if the band sounds "loopy" that is how they are supposed to sound... audience loved them! This will be stored in the "Game Shows" Playlist...more33minPlay

August 17, 2022It Pays To Be Ignorant - Comedy Quiz Show - August 24, 1945"What is a guillotine?"... The first REAL cure for dandruff! Well that is one of the first questions asked of the panel made up of Lulu McConnell, a loud-mouthed comedienne; George Shelton, a vaudeville comedy performer; and Harry McNaughton, a dry dim-sounding Englshman. The host asking the questions in Tom Howard. The program first aired in 1942 and because of it's title "It Pays To Be Ignorant" it was a big risk because the network thought it might be offensive. But people loved it! It ran on CBS and NBC for 9 yrs... ending in 1951. The orchestra that provides "Spike-Jones" like musical interludes was Al Madru and the Esquires and then the "Corncobbers" . This show was broadcast over the AFRS (Armed Forces Radio Service) and featured guests that were military people on leave in NYC. This show is in the "Game Show" Playlist......more30minPlay
August 17, 2022Radio City Playhouse - Fanny - August 21, 1948 - ComedyRadio City Playhouse entered the anthology genre of radio late in the history of radio... 1948. NBC used actors from NYC rather than talent from the West Coast where most of the other radio series were being produced. There were many talented vocal actors in NYC and this show highlights that fact. It is entitled "Fanny" and is about an aging lady who is more than a bit grumpy but worth millions of dollars...and then she meets Joel. This is a very entertaining comedy from this respected anthology series on NBC. This will be stored in the "Comedy" playlist on this Soundcloud.com originating podcast...more33minPlay
