Well, we could spend a week unpacking that, but in short: fear. Being honest is scary. It puts you way out in vulnerable territory, because if you're honest about something—like what you need—and you get rejected, it can cut right to the quick.

And yet…when you’re not honest, there’s no chance your needs ever get met, by anyone. Including yourself. And that gives rise to alllll sorts of problems.
