A 1-1 draw was one that saw Rising systematically control the game and stymie the lurking threat of Monterrey's dreaded counter-attack game throughout the first half. Through loading up the center of the pitch and playing long diagonal switches to their outside back, Phoenix nearly hit on two golden chances in the first half with one header coming off the woodwork and another barely glancing over the crossbar.

Yet, the side gave up a penalty in the 61’ on a wayward challenge during a Monterey corner kick. While Alex Dixon finally had a shot that didn’t result in a goal, this penalty wasn’t one of them as he buried the spot kick to put Monterrey ahead. But not to fear as captain Kevon Lambert towered above the rest on a Rising corner in the 67’ to head the ball in for the equalizer.

The final stretch was fast and furious as Rocco Rios Novo made a Houdini-esque save deep into stoppage time. Minutes later, Carlos Harvey came agonizingly close to snatching the last-second win for Phoenix.
