Hello, and welcome to Your Greek Word On A Sunday, a weekly, bite-size podcast for anyone curious on language, etymology and connections. I am your host, Emmanuela Lia and wherever you are in the world, if you want to entertain your brain for a few minutes, this is the podcast for you. Let's Go!
The history of this machine is more fascinating than the etymology of its name, so I’ll mention a few highlights of its origin. It started as a toy around 400bc, two sticks joined together, one vertical one horizontal. Spin it between your palms and let it go. It flies away! Eons later Leonardo Da Vinci will draw a flying machine under the same logic and call it an ‘Aerial Screw’. There have been many scientists since, who believed in the potential success of such an invention and could see the practical application. Through trial an error, all around the world and as science evolved we get to 1860 in France where Jean de Ponton d’ Amecourt creates the first metallic steam flying machine that has an έλιξ πτερον, a helix wing and uses the Greek words to name it ΕΛΙΚΟΠΤΕΡΟ/HELICOPTER
