It's 2025, and we're still pretending COVID is just another flu.

You've probably noticed it by now. Friends who can't shake that lingering cough. Coworkers who are out sick more often than they're in the office. The endless cycle of "brutal colds" that seem to hit everyone harder and last longer than they used to.

What if I told you this isn't normal? What if I told you we're witnessing the slow-motion collapse of public health in real time?

The official narrative says the pandemic is over. We beat it. Mission accomplished. Time to move on.

But the science tells a different story. A much darker one.

COVID is still circulating widely. The Winter Coronavirus Infection Survey from late 2023 found roughly one in 24 people in the UK were infected. That's not a blip – it's endemic transmission at high levels.

Even more alarming? UK hospitalizations in 2022 were actually higher than in 2020 or 2021. Higher. Let that sink in.

Evidence hidden in bones tells a bloody story of Roman Britain that changes everything we thought we knew.

When we think of Roman gladiator combat, our minds normally drift to the Colosseum in Rome, or perhaps to the sun-baked arenas of North Africa and the Mediterranean. Few of us picture lions stalking the misty shores of Britain. But that's exactly what archaeologists have discovered: concrete evidence of lions in York.

This isn't just any discovery. It's a paradigm shift in our understanding of Roman Britain and the true reach of imperial power and its brutal entertainment industry. The Driffield Terrace Cemetery in York (Roman Eburacum) has been puzzling archaeologists for years. Located along a main road outside the Roman city, it's not your typical burial ground:

• 70% of the burials were decapitations (compared to the usual 5-6%)
• Most decapitations were back-to-front, suggesting execution
• The population heavily skewed toward men aged 18-45
• Almost no women or children
• One individual buried with iron rings still around his ankles

O'Connell describes how his initial boredom in the wilderness—that uncomfortable confrontation with unfilled time—eventually dissolved into what he calls a "meditative stupor." It's precisely this transition that our constant digital engagement prevents.

They told us it would be over in two weeks.

They told us that once you recover, you're fine.

They were wrong about all of it.

Three years into this pandemic, we're finally getting clarity on what COVID actually does to our bodies long-term. The evidence is overwhelming, disturbing, and deliberately downplayed by those who want us to "move on" without addressing the slow-motion public health disaster unfolding around us.

I've spent the last week poring over the Nature Reviews Immunology article that forms the basis of a recent scientific deep dive podcast on long COVID. What I found should terrify anyone still clinging to the fantasy that this virus is "mild" or "endemic" or "just something we need to live with."

Let's be clear: At minimum, 10% of everyone who gets COVID—regardless of vaccination status, severity of initial infection, or personal health—develops some form of long COVID. The real number is likely higher.

The world of corporate climate commitments has become a strange paradox. Every day another Fortune 500 company announces their bold new net zero pledge. They roll out slick presentations full of gradient arrows pointing downward, glossy stock photos of solar panels, and earnest promises about their grandchildren's future.
