  • Six Christian Cliches That Aren’t in Scripture
Many people claim to have "no creed but Christ," yet when you ask them what they believe, you discover nothing but cliches like "let go and let God." Kevin Swanson talks with Jack Lee from the Chorus in the Chaos podcast about the triteness of modern Christianity, and why people are so eager to trivialize the doctrines of Scripture. They look at the big cliches, and ask if the apostles ever said anything like that: - "Christianity is a relationship, not a religion" – why this ironically distorts people's relationship with God so badly that it leads them to hell - "Just because it's in a garage doesn't make it a car, and just because you're in a church doesn't make you a Christian" – but is it possible to be a Christian WITHOUT being in a church? - "Ask Jesus into your heart" – does Jesus want to live in our ugly, wicked hearts, and did the apostles ever preach this way? - "God has a wonderful plan for your life" – really, what is it? - "Once saved, always saved" – how does that square with salvation as a resurrection to a new creation, if you're still living in sin? Understanding the gospel is simple. But reducing the complexities of the Bible to coffee-cup phrases is really dangerous. Got a topic you want us to cover? • But Now
This sermon examines the universal condition of humanity as depicted in Romans, emphasizing that no individual is righteous before God. The speaker uses the metaphor of a football roster to illustrate how God views all people, from various religious backgrounds and cultures, as guilty and under sin. By analyzing the role of the law, the message argues that the law serves to reveal sin and stop all boasting, rather than to justify anyone. The central pivot of the sermon is the phrase "but now" in Romans 3:21, which introduces the manifestation of God's righteousness apart from the law. This righteousness is received through faith in Jesus Christ, who becomes the substitute for sinners, resulting in their free justification and declaration of righteousness by grace.

  • The Gates of Hell
The sermon explores the theological significance of Jesus' declaration in Matthew 16 that the gates of hell shall not prevail against His church. Using the historical fall of Constantinople as an analogy for formidable barriers, the message presents hell as a prison where souls are bound by sin, blindness, and false religion. It emphasizes that Jesus Christ, as the founder and cornerstone of the church, has provided the gospel as the key to unlock this prison and set captives free. Listen along as Pastor Sargent outlines the church's purpose as a soul-rescuing mission, urging believers to rely on the power of the Holy Spirit and prayer to breach these spiritual barriers. The tone is both convicting and encouraging, calling the congregation to active participation in evangelism and missions to fulfill the divine promise of victory over death and darkness.
