As you pay attention to the people on the streets and in the subway, they give indication of a fast-paced and dynamic lifestyle, since metro cars are always packed and especially at night the city transforms into a bustling environment filled with bars and nightclubs. This aspect contributes to creating a double-faced culture, where the cityʼs fast way of living and skyscrapers meet the more quiet and calm lifestyle represented by the numerous shrines and rural areas.

Food was definitely a big component in our period in Tokyo, as our experience here got enriched not only by all the varieties of the Japanese cuisine, which goes far beyond sushi, ramen and tempura, but also by the etiquette which is expected in restaurants. We had leave behind forks and knives and get used to chopsticks (after a few failed attempts and stains!), and adopt manners that in Europe would be considered impolite but are just part of the culture here, such as slurping noodles.

Direct Reflections from the Interns

As the weeks passed, we interns often had discussions about the different polarizing lifestyle in the country and we often diverged among ourselves about impressions and key elements we found most noticeable.

Alex Laybourneʼs Perspective: Efficiency and brandingAlex Laybourne, a 19-year-old intern from Liverpool, England, reported to me that

she found many aspects she enjoyed observing during her time in Japan.

One of the biggest differences from the UK she noticed was the efficiency of the transportation and cleaning systems: she stated that the British train system is very often unreliable, while the Japanese one is always correct and on time; similarly, according to her, the overhaul cleanliness of Japan is far superior to the UK, which is really impressive considering that trash bins are very difficult to find in Tokyo.

Another factor she observed was the branding and presence of some of televisionʼs biggest icons; as a matter of fact Alex said: “For me personally it felt so refreshing and comforting to see characters and brands such as Pokémon or Studio Ghibli plastered everywhere. I felt like my childhood was on display and it made my trip so enjoyableˮ.

The only downside she mentioned was the reclusive characteristic of the population: the people here rarely engage in conversations and sometimes they can seem cold, compared to Europe; while back home there are many possibilities to share a few words with people on the subway or waiters and cashiers in restaurants, the Japanese population is really reserved and cautious, especially with foreigners. This factor is highlighted by the fact that generally there is a low percentage of people fluent in English in the country, so the linguistic barrier makes the communication even more difficult.

Giovanni Piccininiʼs Insights: Precision and AdaptabilityThe second intern Giovanni Piccinini (Italy, 24) noticed a few particular differences from his country.

First of all, he stated that precision is such a consistent element both in and out of the workplace that he feels more precise after this experience. This characteristic can be seen in many aspects of life: among many, Japanese people put enviable precision in work presentations and contents, food preparation and entertainment output.

Then, there is something positive coming from the lack of English fluency of regular people: it helps you develop new skills, not only useful in the office, but in all contexts, which are adaptability and flexibility. When talking to someone who speaks a different language and has no way to understand what youʼre saying, you both have to find a middle ground and a compromise; only in this way you can create a bridge between the two cultures.

Luca Innocentiʼs Impressions: Social Etiquette and Urban Calm

Now we move to the third intern, which in this case is me (Luca Innocenti). Since I came back home, my time and my experiences in Tokyo have proven to be valuable in many ways, especially those related to the attitude that I developed during my stay in the city.

As a 21-year-old foreign intern in Japan, I had to face a few challenges in everyday life: apart from some of the issues I have already listed, like the language barrier and the peopleʼs reserve, one that I found kind of testing was the different social etiquette.

Coming from Italy, Iʼm used to address problems, but also positive aspects, by talking openly and Iʼm also used to people speaking loudly in most locations, while I noticed that Japan is characterized by a very silent population; this not only involves finding yourself as the only one speaking in places where youʼre supposed to be quiet (as it happened to me several times, especially in the subway), but even in the workplace, comments about your work and compliments or downsides are addressed implicitly. Another example that surprised me during my first days is that when you walk into a store or your hotel lobby, probably you wonʼt be approached or talked to by the clerks or receptions, who will just greet you by bowing, reinforcing my perception of a silent population.

Moving onto some of strong aspects of Tokyo, I can safely say that the city has offered me a sense of calm that I didnʼt expect from such a massive metropolis. Iʼm originally from Milan, which is considered to be the busiest and most fast- paced city in Italy, so I was already used to the chaos that a big city entails and I though I knew what I was getting myself into.

Staying in Shinjuku, one of the cityʼs biggest and most crowded neighbourhoods, I got quickly used to its dynamism, but I didnʼt think it could host one of the biggest public gardens I have ever been to, Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden; in this park I found a sense of calm which was incredibly contrasting to all the other locations in the neighbourhood, especially to Shinjuku Station, the busiest train station in the world.

Looking back now, the entire city can be considered as a place of contrasts, and thatʼs what makes it beautiful and worth visiting. Everywhere you go in Tokyo, you get to breath a little bit of both chaos and relax; first of all, the crowded streets and subway stations are a constant reminder of one of the most active towns in the world, but if you enter into one of the numerous parks or shrines, youʼll encounter a millennial tradition all based on silence, calm and respect.

This characteristic easily transfers to the workplace, where employees are focused solely on their tasks during working hours. Meanwhile, during their spare time, Japanese people feel free to enjoy other aspects of life and dedicate themselves to hobbies and physical activities.

The value of working in Japan

Working in Tokyo has been such a formative experience, since all of us can safely say that we have adopted some Japanese customs even after returning home.

After my internship, I find myself placing more emphasis on teamwork and collaboration, considering that group harmony is one of the key elements in the workplace (as Iʼve already talked about in my previous article “How the Japanese work culture changed in the past decadesˮ).

Another aspect now very important to me is the kaizen philosophy, so the effort of adopting some sort of continuous improvement everyday, no matter how small.

Everyone who spends a period abroad in Japan, either for an internship or a more advanced job placement, will encounter a different lifestyle, which will provide him with new values that will give them a competitive advantage against similar candidates for future positions.

Japan is a nation known for its technological initiative and innovative spirit, and in recent years, it has become a global leader in the journey towards a sustainable future through its commitment to sustainable engineering; in fact, according to a research carried out by UNEP (United Nations Environment Programme), Japan’s renewable energy capacity investment was ranked fourth in the world in 2019.

First of all, we should have an exact definition of sustainable engineering: it consists of designing systems in a way that minimizes the negative impacts on the environment.

These efforts are shown in the integration of environmental considerations into the engineering profession in different ways. For instance, some researchers are currently exploring new options for widely used materials like plastic, which is harmful to the environment as it takes centuries to decompose. Another way Japanese engineers are incorporating sustainable practices is by aiming for green certificates, which state the extent to which new buildings are adding value to the surrounding environment; these green certificates include the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) and CASBEE (Comprehensive Assessment System for Built Environment Efficiency).

Even though climate change is on the minds of engineers when developing a plan, they are not ready to sacrifice performance and the economic value brought by the project. Therefore, the final product will be a mix of innovative aspects and sustainable solutions.

This article addresses Japan's efforts in sustainable engineering, including:

* the most important green certificate

* the path towards renewable energy

* some global policies that provide regulations for individual countries to face ongoing climate change

* how the country's infrastructure is already implementing green features.

In recent years, there has been a remarkable rise in the demand for engineers, and Japanese companies are starting to amplify their research abroad (for more information about this topic please consult my other article “Opportunities for IT professionals working in Japan”, available on Substack).

Thanks to new possibilities created by investments in sustainable engineering, the nation has become the perfect option for everyone seeking an experience in the world's most dynamic and tech-powered business environment.

CASBEE

The Comprehensive Assessment System for Built Environment Efficiency (CASBEE) is one method adopted by the country to monitor how new constructions affect climate change. It is a rating tool to evaluate a building's construction performance from a sustainable point of view.

Similar analysis instruments are adopted in Japan, including BELS (Building-Housing Energy-efficiency Labeling System), ZEH (Net Zero Energy House) and LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design).

The CASBEE is often preferred to similar practices because it is specifically designed for Japan’s environmental conditions, including seismic activity and urban density, and its evaluation model covers a wider range of criteria compared to other systems.

The first assessment tool became effective in 2002 for offices. Unlike other rating systems, the CASBEE was not established by a non-profit organization; instead, there was a strong role played by the government itself.

The government is deeply involved in controlling climate change and has supported efforts ever since it declared the objective of reaching carbon neutrality by 2050.

This system works thanks to an indicator called BEE, which stands for Building Environmental Efficiency. It considers a hypothetical boundary to analyze the building in relation to its context. The indicator is based on two factors: environmental quality and environmental load.

First of all, environmental quality focuses on the improvement of the internal environment within the boundary, thus on the quality of life for inhabitants. This aspect is divided into three subcomponents: indoor environment, quality of service, and outdoor environment.

Then, environmental load analyzes the negative impact on the environment and is based on three aspects as well: energy, resources and materials, and off-site environment.

Finally, the CASBEE uses a scale from S (excellent) to C (poor) to categorize how sustainable buildings are.

Transition to Renewable Energy

Being already the world leader for some the of the biggest technological advancement, Japan is quickly becoming a model to follow for the introduction of renewable energy sources.

Its journey towards these new solutions was marked by policies and measures taken in moments of crises, which gave the country a push to leave behind fossil fuels and adopt more sustainable methods.

The first real effort to implement renewable energy systems came in the 1970s after two important oil shocks; during this decade, two projects were initiated: the Sunshine Program and the Moonlight Program.

The two oil crises really shook the Japanese economy, as the country was experiencing several years of economic growth prior to the mid-1970s. If we analyze the effects of the first shock, we will see that apart from a decrease in the economic growth from 8% to 4% in 1971, Japan was in a good place economically speaking, but 1973’s oil crisis caused recession, as it led to a 10% fall in the economic growth.

This analysis is to show that the effects generated by this moment of crisis were so impactful that it was a real moment of realization for the government to move towards renewable energy, to reduce the dependance from oil.

The Sunshine Program (1974) was the first one to be implemented and it was developed to reduce the country’s dependance from fossil fuels by exploiting solar energy, geothermal power, wind power and tidal energy.

Instead, the Moonlight Program (1978) was carried out not to develop renewable energy, but to explore energy conservation and efficiency.

Moving closer to us in the timeline, an important step for the adoption of new types of energy sources was taken by the Kyoto Protocol (1997), which set binding emission reduction objectives for developed countries. The pact was hosted and of course signed by Japan.

Another key protocol for sustainability was the Paris Agreement (2016), and the countries who signed it agreed to limit the global warming to well below 2 degrees Celsius, compared to pre-industrial times.

Sustainable Public Transportation

Japan's efforts to reduce emissions and have a positive impact on the environment are highlighted in its public transportation system.

Within cities, a functioning infrastructure has successfully reduced the number of cars in urban centers, resulting in lower emissions.

For intercity connections, Japan relies on the Shinkansen, the incredibly fast bullet train, which is also very sustainable since it is based on electricity rather than fossil fuels. The country is currently developing Maglev trains, which use magnetic levitation.

The introduction of Maglev trains will enable enhanced efficiency and eco-friendly transportation.

In the areas of Tokyo and Kyoto, several trains run on 100% renewable energy. Additionally, the transportation company JR East declared in February 2022 its intention to adopt hydrogen-powered trains to be operative by 2030.

These reasons illustrate why sustainability is vital to the government and the population, and it is being implemented by both domestic and foreign engineers. Foreign talents working in this field in Japan will experience a high level of expertise and experimentation due to all the innovative projects listed so far, boosting their future careers.

New researchers’ efforts

Researchers are currently developing new materials that can pollute less than traditional ones. For example, they are exploring new types of biodegradable plastics, as usual petroleum-based plastics are very polluting and take hundreds of years to decompose. New materials with no toxic components are being investigated.

Japan is also addressing the issue of marine litter. The government has stated that the amount of plastic drifting in the oceans is about 150 million tons.

Experts have proposed alternatives, including polylactic acid (PLA), a plant-based biodegradable plastic. Although PLA presents challenges such as high raw material costs and low heat resistance, it also has significant benefits, decomposing into water and carbon dioxide in soil or seawater within a few months.

Another sector where researchers are focusing their efforts is in efficient buildings. Engineers are developing systems to optimize energy, heating, and lighting in energy-consuming buildings.

Research in this field also includes finding new materials for building insulation. A good alternative could reduce heating and cooling expenses.

Japan is known to be one of the most promising countries in the technology department, as investments in this area are considered a priority; the high level of technological advancement is what makes it a perfect choice for IT engineers looking for a job abroad, as an experience here will provide them with opportunities few other environments can offer.

As technology is a vital part in engineers’ profession, their work would be enhanced by the more powerful and competitive tools that can be found in Japanese companies; this aspect is also motivating for the workers for sure, allowing them to take pride in their work.

This article will explore the opportunities that the country creates for IT employees, who can grow as professionals if they are able to leverage the processes available in the Nipponic islands.

Growing demand of engineers

In the last few years, the country has been experiencing an increase in the demand for engineers and there are few reasons behind this phenomenon.

First of all, Japan is currently addressing the challenge of an aging population. The senior population (i.e. all citizens above the age of 65) represents 30% of the community and the fertility rate (i.e. the number of children borne by women) is 1.21. The table below shows the aging index:

Translating these numbers in the work environment, it means that there is a very restricted workforce, since almost a third of the residents is retired. Even though there is a high demand for engineers in all countries, there is an even higher one in Japan, as recruiters have a smaller pool in which to look for.

Then, another factor that boosts the research of IT professionals is the nation’s reputation of being a frontrunner in technological development: the country is one of the most important contributors in artificial intelligence, robotics, IoT and sustainability, therefore it needs more and more engineers to sustain development and maintenance of these technologies.

The last factor we will consider is the continuous urban development that is initiated in Japanese cities. In the streets cutting-edge technologies can be found and all infrastructures require thoughtful engineers, as they are built to resist against the several natural events that citizens have to deal with, like earthquakes and tsunamis.

The country’s focus on technology

There is one main historical reason that provides context on why Japan can be considered a force in the development of new technologies and processes.

During the Meiji Era, the country embarked on a quick journey towards modernization, to reach the level of Western countries; this was just the beginning of its leadership in the technological field.

This type of advancement is considered a priority by all parties, both in the public and private sectors.

Focusing on the public sector, there is one of the highest levels of R&D expenditure in the world. According to data showed by the Statistics Bureau of Japan regarding the fiscal year of 2022, the government expenditure in R&D resulted equal to 20.7 trillion yen.

These funds have been spent particularly in three sectors: AI and Biotechnology, which have both witnessed an increase of 55% compared to the previous year, and Quantum technology.

The government’s commitment is also highlighted by 2016’s Society 5.0, which is the plan to induce a new industrial revolution to create a new type of society, defined as “Super Smart Society”. This initiative proposes to integrate new technologies like AI and robotics in all aspects of day-to-day life; as engineers are the ones expected to help implementing this new society, we can only imagine the benefits they would gain from moving to Japan in such a crucial time.

Predictable benefits

There are many ways that IT professionals can benefit from a period of staying in Japan, both on a working and personal level.

Starting with the country’s quality of life, it is known worldwide for the fact that it can count on an efficient and high-quality infrastructure, which includes functioning public transportation, healthcare system and an overall safe environment, since there is a very low crime rate, resulting in Japan’s inclusion in the top 10 of the safest nations of the world.

Having this type of context is very important for foreign talents, as the degree of safety and efficiency should be considered.

Moving to benefits on a professional level, engineers could take advantage from Japan’s position as an international force and from exposure to cutting-edge technology. If these talents are able to land a position in some of the biggest companies, like Rakuten, Toyota or Mitsubishi, it would be a valuable and enviable experience, since these firms are widely renowned.

Then, witnessing first hand the technology available in the country would be a great opportunity to develop new skills and engage in stimulating projects that would not be present in other countries. Experiencing these types of processes can potentially make the employee more competitive for future positions too, as just a few people are lucky enough to write down in their CV to have used the world’s most advanced tools.

Addressing more practical issues, we should also consider the case of an engineer moving here with their family. We already said the country’s one of the safest in the world, which is a good enough reason to raise a family here.

Foreign people coming to Japan can also count on high-quality education for their children, as both public and private schools offer the opportunity to integrate within the Japanese society and learn the language and culture.

Finally, the healthcare system is really efficient and well-functioning and it’s not uncommon that employers provide to foreign employees insurance that also covers the family’s needs.
