Helping Instead of Waiting

Listen Later

In this powerful exploration of waiting on God, we journey through the story of Abram and Sarai, a couple who received an audacious promise from God that seemed impossible given their circumstances. God promised to make them into a great nation through whom all peoples on earth would be blessed, yet they remained childless for 25 years. The narrative challenges us to examine our own impatience and our tendency to help God along when His timing doesn't align with ours. Like using an electric toothbrush incorrectly by brushing manually, we often work against God's perfect plan by inserting our own efforts. The story reveals how Sarai's plan to have a child through her servant Hagar created generational conflict that persists to this day between the descendants of Isaac and Ishmael. Yet remarkably, Scripture still counts Abram and Sarai as faithful despite their misstep. This gives us tremendous hope that even when we've jumped ahead of God, we can return to trusting Him today. The message invites us to practice restraint, a discipline that feels counterintuitive in our action-oriented culture, and to ask ourselves a crucial question: Do we have clarity from God for the things we're waiting for, or are we holding Him accountable for promises He never made?

Chapters
Chapter 1: Introduction and Celebration 0:00 - 3:00
We celebrate receiving approval for construction permits and introduce the teaching series on waiting well, using the analogy of an electric toothbrush to illustrate how our attempts to help God can work against His purposes.
Chapter 2: The Story of Abram and Sarai's Promise 3:00 - 17:30
We examine the narrative of Abram and Sarai, who received God's promise of descendants at age 75 but waited 25 years for fulfillment, eventually taking matters into their own hands through Hagar.
Chapter 3: God's Faithfulness Despite Our Impatience 17:30 - 27:30
We learn that despite Abram and Sarai's impatience and attempt to fulfill God's promise themselves, Scripture still records them as faithful, demonstrating that we can return to trusting God even after we've jumped ahead.
Chapter 4: Learning Constraint and Evaluating Our Steps 27:30 - 42:02
We learn that waiting well includes restraint and doing nothing when no alternative movement is possible without forfeiting obedience, and we're given four evaluative questions to guide our decisions.
