  • The Definition Of A Firebrand
The definition of a firebrand, today's guest is one of the OG cannabis activists and that wasn't the only pioneering quilty she had. Elvy Musikka was also something of a rarity in this country by being someone who receives cannabis from the federal government, at no charge. Uncle Sam is her weed dealer. Born in Colombia in 1939, Musikka moved in 1953 with her parents to the States, where surgery for her congenital cataracts left her partially blinded and eventually led to glaucoma. She was arrested in 1988 for cannabis cultivation, and decided to petition to the National Institute of Drug Abuse, and requested to be added to an Investigative New Drug program. She was approved, which resulted in her joining Robert Randall and Irvin Rosenfeld as participants in the program. Because of their tireless efforts to help others, 18 additional patients were also enrolled, each one having to submit extensive medical records from a “reliable doctor” to the Department Enforcement Agency, Food and Drug Administration, and NIDA. Musikka receives some of that infamous, federally-approved, University of Mississippi-grown cannabis—300 joints per month in a large tin, which she picks up all at once each January in Florida. However, the fed’s weed leaves something to be desired, to say the least. Until recently, seeds and stems were common, and the flower usually tops out between four to six percent THC—when it’s really even weed, and not just hemp.

Cat Jeter, know in her community as "Grandma Cat Jeter" is the founder of Deep Green, an award-winning full plant extracts manufacturer in Washington State. She recently joined our host Shango Los for a conversation about the history of the Washington State medical marijuana market, which will soon be absorbed by the recreational market due to pending regulations. Cat is a prominent protector of that flame in Washington. She has participated in almost every aspect of the cannabis industry, and advocacy, and because of that, she has an understanding of the of cannabis history that few can be able to offer. Deep Green was established in 2010 by Jeter to help children in need of pure, potent, and always tested Full Plant Extract of Cannabis Oil at a time when it was difficult to find. While testing was not required for many years, Deep Green committed to testing every batch. • Cannabis Activism Hero John Sinclair
Today on Hempresent Vivian is joined by American poet, writer and radio maker, John Sinclair. John made incalculable contributions to cannabis legalization and is celebrated as a heroic icon of American counterculture and of cannabis activism in particular. After he was arrested for giving two joints to an undercover narcotics officer in 1969 he was sentenced to the unusual punishment of 10 years for mere possession. John's arrest and cruel sentence sparked the landmark 'Free John Now Rally' held in Ann Arbour, December 1971. Due to the continued pressure to release John, by his friends on the outside and his own campaigning, a huge event was planned to include John Lennon and Yoko Ono, Stevie Wonder, David Peel, Pete Seeger, Allen Ginsberg, Abbie Hoffmann, Jerry Rubin, and others. John Lennon recorded and dedicated the song "John Sinclair" to the cause, and included it on his album 'Some Time in New York City' (1972).
