A cat has tested positive for rabies after it scratched its owner in Eastern Henrico. Police said the cat became ill and acting out of character March 28 in the 1500 block of Rustling Cedar Lane in the Varina District. No other animals or humans were exposed to the cat, according to police. The cat's remains were submitted to the Virginia state lab, which confirmed a positive case of rabies (the second confirmed case in the county so far this year). Henrico Police officials are investigating a homicide in the county's Fairfield District after a 53-year-old woman was found dead in a home on Monday. The victim, Nancy Arlene Moore of Henrico, was found at about 8:25 a.m. April 1 inside a home on Ammons Avenue. Moore's cause of death has not yet been determined. Henrico County has received .6 million in funding from Virginia to help establish a 24-hour treatment center for adults experiencing mental health crises or requiring detoxification services. The new facility, which is part of Virginia's Right Help, Right Now plan, will be located at the Eastern Government Center on Nine Mile Road and will include 16 crisis stabilization unit beds, 16 detoxification beds and 16 23-hour recliners for evaluation, calming and additional treatment and support. A number of instructional assistants, custodians, and other support staff called on Henrico Schools to extend equal pay raises to all school employees. Henrico County Manager John Vithoulkas announced March 12 that the proposed 2024-2025 county budget would include a 4.8% pay raise for all eligible county employees, as well as an additional one-step pay increase for licensed instructional staff and bus drivers. An audit recently released by the U.S. Postal Service's Office of the Inspector General sheds some light on why mail delivery has caused headaches across Central Virginia for months.
