Gailes Scholarship, given to a graduating high school senior who attended Quioccasin Middle School (previously Byrd Middle) for at least two years, is currently accepting applications for 2024. Seniors who have demonstrated a commitment to academic excellence, leadership, and moral character are eligible to apply. The scholarship was established by the PTA of Harry F. Byrd Middle School in June 1984 and is named in honor of the school's first principal, who devoted 33 years to educating, inspiring, and enriching the lives of students. The Ukrop’s Monument Avenue 10k presented by Kroger will return April 20 for its 25th anniversary, and event organizers recently unveiled new designs for the participant shirt and finisher medal. The designs, revealed at Ukrop's Market Hall in Henrico, feature iconic row homes, elements of the out-and-back course, and imagery symbolic of what racers and attendees may see on race day. The American Lung Association's annual State of Tobacco Control report gave Virginia four F grades and one B grade for efforts to prevent and reduce tobacco use. The report recommends that Virginia policymakers focus on requiring tobacco product retailers to obtain a license and close the loopholes in the state’s Clean Indoor Air Act. The report also recommends increasing the tax on cigarettes and passing a comprehensive smokefree law. Henrico School’s Workforce and Career Development program handed out 593 student resumes to employers who attended this year’s CTE Career Rodeo – and at least five students were hired on the spot. The Virginia housing market has seen its slowest sales in nearly a decade, according to the latest report released by Virginia Realtors. According to the December 2023 Virginia Home Sales Report, the total number of homes sold statewide in 2023 was 98,464, which is a significant 24,780 decrease from the same annual total in 2022 (a 20% drop in activity). The report indicates that the primary causes of the slowdown were rising mortgage rates and a lack of inventory. Virginia State Parks is seeking crew leaders for its Youth Conservation Corps. The leaders will oversee groups of 10 teens between the age of 14 and 17 who will work to help maintain parks, build trails, and promote environmental stewardship as part of the program. Youth participants will work alongside park staff on trail maintenance, basic construction, and beautification of parks. A Henrico coalition held a town hall for teenagers Wednesday evening, in an effort to fight opioid misuse. Henrico Too Smart 2 Start, the nonprofit coalition, said their research concluded that opioid misuse is on the rise for kids in Central Virginia. They are finding the misuse is coming from teens who are taking more than what doctors prescribe, taking other medication, or getting fake pills at parties.
