Under the cool, dim cover of a fall evening, floodlights cast a bright glow over Brookley Fields in Glen Allen. The youth soccer players of Arya RVA FC have converged for a practice session. With a tournament approaching in just a couple of weeks, the U12 and U14 teams begin their drills as laughter and the occasional phrase in Farsi mingle with the thud of soccer balls and the distant rumble of a passing train. On the walls of Jessica Vincent's Henrico County home are two shelves filled with décor -- pieces she has collected throughout her years going thrift store shopping. Varina Ruritan Club recently sponsored its Big Toy Christmas Parade, featuring more than 60 floats and entries, to raise money for the Henrico Christmas Mother. The parade took place Dec. 9 along Osborne Turnpike in Varina, ending at Osborne Landing, where attendees enjoyed food and drinks from food trucks, as well as games and vendors in an event sponsored by Henrico Recreation & Parks division. Youngsters who are at least 8 but younger than 12 are invited to attend Shooting Stars Youth Basketball Day at the new Henrico Sports and Events Center in Glen Allen Friday, Jan. 5 (the last day of Henrico Schools’ winter break). The event, from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., will allow participants to play in the new arena, receiving coaching and participate in drills, and conclude the day with a 3-on-3 tournament. Meadow Road near the intersection of Crib Lane was closed Wednesday morning as crews worked to repair a utility pole that was broken as a result of a single-vehicle crash. Henrico Police anticipated that the road would be closed for several hours. Only minor injuries were reported as a result of the crash.  Article Link

The Henrico School Board last week formally requested an additional million in funding from the Henrico Board of Supervisors – money that it would use to replace aging air conditioning units and roofs at public schools. At a Dec. 14 meeting, the school board passed the division’s capital improvement plan for fiscal year 2024-2025, which requests that the board of supervisors allocate million to Henrico Schools for building maintenance – a million increase from what was allocated in the current fiscal year. HCA Healthcare's Henrico Doctors' Hospital, the hospital where 28-year-old Irvo Otieno was first taken while he was in a mental health crisis days before his death, failed to give Otieno the emergency treatment he needed, according to an investigative report obtained by CBS 6. In response to a complaint about how the hospital handled Otieno, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services requested that the Virginia Department of Health (VDH) complete an investigation into whether the facility followed federal regulations.
