It's not finished yet, but Henrico officials already have booked the first national sports event for the Henrico Sports and Event Center in Glen Allen. The facility, due to be completed this September, will host the 2024 Adult and Junior Division Wheelchair Basketball national tournaments April 5-7 and April 12-14, 2024. The National Wheelchair Basketball Association, Sportable, Richmond Region Tourism, and the Henrico Sports and Entertainment Authority made the announcement Thursday. Nonprofit organization Heart Havens is opening a new home in Henrico County for adults with a developmental disability. The location in Glen Allen will support four people with developmental disabilities, providing 24 hour care and support to help them be as independent as possible while also connecting them with the community. It is projected to open with the first clients moving in to the home in mid April. Heart Havens clients all have been diagnosed with a developmental disability in childhood, and many also have physical disabilities. A Henrico student was honored Tuesday as one of three winners of the sixth annual Virginia Lottery Thank a Teacher Art Contest. Vaidehi Murthy, a tenth-grader at Deep Run High School, won the contest’s “high school” category. Rev. Al Sharpton, a civil rights activist, has been invited by the family of Irvo Otieno to eulogize Otieno. Sharpton's National Action Network made the announcement Tuesday afternoon. Otieno, 28 of Henrico, died March 6 at Central State Hospital in Dinwiddie County while being restrained by a group of Henrico Sheriff's deputies. Dinwiddie County Commonwealth's Attorney Ann C. Baskervill said in court that Otieno died by asphyxiation, but defense attorneys have challenged that assertion. Tuckahoe District Supervisor Patricia S. O’Bannon will host a Tuckahoe Town Meeting on Thursday, March 30 to discuss Henrico County’s plans for a detoxification and recovery center as well as the county’s internship program. O’Bannon will discuss the detox center with Deputy County Manager for Public Safety Michael Feinmel and Henrico Area Mental Health and Developmental Services Executive Director Laura Totty.
