This guy probably scammed me for beer money. He said he worked for the temple — and insisted that I ring a large gong — but my “donation” of 5-ish dollars turned into beer, not Buddhism. 

I liked him. We talked:

• The easeful acceptance of transwomen in Thailand (Ladyboys)
• How women were bought from poor families in the recent past
• Why men still pay a fee for their bride — even if she earns
