Publisher's Summary:
A marriage offer obligated by duty; an acceptance, compelled by desperation.
At two and 20 and scarred from a fire, Philomena Pomfrett is resigned to spinsterhood, but to ease her dying brother's fretting, she reluctantly agrees to attend a London season - to acquire a husband. If she fails, when he dies, with no family and no money, her future is perilous. Betrayed once by love, Philomena entertains no notions of a love-match.
Newly titled, Bradford, Viscount Kingsley, returns to England after a three-year absence. When he stumbles upon Philomena hiding in a secluded arbor during a ball, he doesn't recognize his first love, believing she died in a fire. Yet, something about her enthralls him, and he steals a moonlit kiss. Caught in the act by Philomena's brother, Bradford is issued an ultimatum - a duel or marry Philomena.
Bradford offers marriage, but Philomena rejects his half-hearted proposal, convinced he'd grow to despise her. Then her brother collapses, and she's faced with marrying a man who deserted her once already.
Members Reviews:
Great book and awesome narration..
I love most of these novellas of Collette Cameron, though she has become a hit and miss for me. One book shell have the hero and heroine as beautiful as I want them to be (keep in mind Im shallow) and in the next book they are the opposite. In this one Philomena was full figured/plump, however you want to say it, but since it was less than 100 pages I went ahead and read it. Im beginning to think I should give up on this author. Shes another one that wants to make book characters like the real world and I dont read for that kind of heroine, especially when shes paired with a hero whos drop-dead gorgeous.
Also, I really hated that her brother Giles spent almost the entire book on his deathbed and he was only 27. That totally sucked. If youre going to write less than 100 pages put some angst in it but not someone so young being so darn sick. Just sayin
So, Bradfords uncle was a piece of work, telling Bradford that Philomena and Giles, as well as their parents, were killed in a fire. Only to have Bradford and Philomena meet in the garden at a ball after seven years. They were found in a compromising situation by Philomenas brother and as sick as he was he called Bradford out, or Bradford could marry his sister, Bradford's choice. Giles collapsed before the argument could go much further. Then he remained unconscious for the next ten days. It was a sweet romantic novella and also very sad.
Overall, I really did like this story.
There was no sex but there was desire. It really didnt need sex. And there was no swearing.
AS to the narration: LOVE Stevie Zimmerman. Her voices and emotions while reading are awesome.
