Why do so many women grow up feeling responsible for everyone around them? In this conversation, Asal Zara speaks with Professor Claire Delahey about the expectations girls absorb from childhood and how those early lessons continue into relationships, motherhood, money, work, confidence, and family life. Please visit our website for more information: http://www.hersideofthestories.com
Professor Delahey reflects on how girls learn to help, please, care, and keep other people comfortable long before they fully understand those expectations. She also explores how these patterns affect boundaries, self-worth, parenting, relationships, financial decisions, and the invisible work women often carry.
Topics covered:
Why Girls Learn to Please Others
How Gender Roles Start in Childhood
Teaching Girls to Say No
Raising Children With More Freedom
Beauty, Confidence and Self-Worth
Love, Money and Equality in Relationships
The Invisible Work Women Carry
Weaponized Incompetence at Home
Mother Guilt and the Pressure to Be Perfect
Why Women Judge Other Women
Financial Independence in Relationships
What Equality Looks Like in Everyday Life
Professor Delahey also explains why equality is often shaped by small everyday choices inside homes and relationships, not only by larger political questions. The discussion moves from childhood expectations to money, parenting, domestic work, beauty standards, and the pressure many women feel to do everything well.

Why do we replay conversations, analyze someone’s tone, or assume a change in mood means we did something wrong? In this solo episode, Asal Zara reflects on why overthinking often starts as an attempt to feel prepared, safe, and certain about what comes next. Please visit our website for more information: http://www.hersideofthestories.com
Asal explores how learning to read other people’s moods early in life sometimes turns into constant analysis later on. She looks at why silence feels personal, why uncertainty feels difficult, and why people sometimes keep thinking long after there is no new information left to find.
She also reflects on the difference between useful reflection and going around the same thought repeatedly. The deeper question is not always whether you made the right decision. Sometimes the real question is whether you trust yourself to deal with whatever happens next.
Topics covered:

Fear of Rejection and Uncertainty
Childhood Patterns and Reading the Room
Why Other People’s Moods Feel Personal
Reflection vs Repeating the Same Thought
Looking for Certainty Before Making Decisions
Why Not Every Feeling Needs an Explanation

Accepting That Some Questions Stay Unanswered
Building Self-Trust
Trusting Yourself With What Happens Next
You do not need every answer in advance. Sometimes peace starts with trusting yourself to handle what comes next.

Some women look like they have everything together.
The career, the marriage, the children, the life that seems strong from the outside.
But behind closed doors, they are quietly falling apart.
Canay Atalay was successful, respected, married, a mother of two young girls, and leading in a world where people saw her as strong and capable.
But at home, life looked completely different.
She was living with a husband who was struggling with alcohol addiction, trying to protect her children, hiding what was really happening from almost everyone, and waking up every morning with what she describes as darkness.
I think that is the part so many women will understand in some way. Not the exact story, maybe.
But the feeling of holding a life together from the outside, while somewhere inside you know you are slowly disappearing.
In this episode of Her Side of the Stories, I sit with Canay Atalay, founder of RegenerateX and curator of Heart Masters Ibiza. Through her work, she helps people and organisations create positive change through leadership, innovation and a more conscious way of looking at life.
We talk about marriage, motherhood, addiction, shame, divorce, court battles, and the moment she looked in the mirror and no longer recognised herself.
We talk about the pressure to look successful.
The loneliness of hiding what is really going on.
And the strange way we can keep functioning, keep working, keep mothering, keep smiling, while something inside us is completely exhausted. But this conversation is also about what happened after.
How Canay moved from anger to peace. How she learned to listen differently. How she rebuilt her relationship with the father of her children.
And how their divorce eventually became part of a legal shift in Turkey around common custody.

Millions know Liv Nervo as one half of the Grammy-winning Australian DJ and songwriting duo NERVO. But behind the music and public life is a deeply personal chapter that changed the way she understood relationships, family, trust, and herself. Please visit our website for more information: http://www.hersideofthestories.com
In this intimate conversation with Asal Zara, Liv reflects on growing up between Australian and Italian cultures, why stability once felt so important to her, and the relationship she believed would become the family she had imagined. While pregnant, that picture changed completely when she learned the life she thought she knew wasn't what it seemed.
Liv speaks about becoming a mother while adjusting to an entirely different future, questioning the ideas she once held about what a family should look like, and learning to create stability for her daughter in a new way. She also reflects on how the experience changed her friendships, values, empathy, and ability to trust other people.
