In this episode of Her Wellness Pause, I’m breaking down two nutrition myths that I hear all the time: that carbs make you gain body fat, and that you can simply exercise more to lose it. These ideas sound convincing because they’re repeated so often, but fat loss is actually much less dramatic, and much more manageable, than most diet culture makes it seem.
I’ll explain what really drives body-fat loss, why carbohydrates can absolutely fit into a healthy diet, and why strength training, protein, daily movement, and a sustainable calorie deficit matter so much more than cutting out entire food groups or trying to “earn” your food with exercise. I also talk about why preserving muscle becomes especially important in midlife, not just for appearance, but for strength, function, bone health, and long-term wellness.
At the end of the episode, I’ll give you a simple three-day exercise to help you look at your own eating patterns without judgment and identify one realistic change that could make a difference.
We often set goals like “I want to get healthier” or “I want to exercise more.” I’ve set goals like that myself, and I know how frustrating it can feel when you’re putting in effort but can’t tell whether you’re making progress.
In this episode, I’ll talk about how to take a big health or wellness goal and turn it into something you can actually work on this week. I’ll walk you through a simple example, explain how SMART goals can help, and share why patience is such an important part of the process. Progress doesn’t always happen as quickly as we’d like, and a week that doesn’t go to plan can still teach us something useful.
I’ll also guide you through a short exercise you can do on your own. By the end, you’ll have a goal that matters to you, one realistic action step for the coming week, and a backup plan for when life gets busy.
Grab a pen or open a note on your phone, and let’s start with one small step.
Welcome to the very first episode of Her Wellness Pause.
In this introductory episode, I’m sharing who I am, why I created this podcast, and what you can expect from future episodes.
Her Wellness Pause is designed especially for women over 40 who are navigating the many physical and lifestyle changes that can come with midlife-from perimenopause and menopause to changing family roles, empty nesting, career shifts, stress, sleep, body composition, and the challenge of prioritizing your own health while still managing everything else.
We’ll talk about nutrition, strength training, cardiovascular health, healthy aging, sustainable weight management, sleep, stress, supplements, endurance, and behavior change.
Most importantly, everything discussed here will be grounded in science-based evidence-not wellness fads, extreme approaches, or fear-based advice.
Episodes will be short and practical, generally 10–15 minutes, so you can listen while walking, driving, getting ready, or simply taking a little time for yourself.
My goal is to help make health feel simpler, more realistic, and more sustainable, so you can feel strong, capable, and confident as you move through this next stage of life.
Thanks for joining me for the beginning of Her Wellness Pause.
