Herald of Grace Sermons

As a wise preacher once said:

“You cannot see the stars of God’s grace and His love with so much light when preachers tell you that men are so good. The only way to truly appreciate the love of God and the grace of God is to see the pitch-dark blackness of man. When you see the pitch-dark blackness of your own heart and then realize that God moved in love for you, it causes you to fall down on your knees with the greatest esteem and worship God.”

We can only much more appreciate the love of God if we are fully aware of our wickedness and transgression towards a Holy God.

In John Calvin’s Institutes of the Christian Religion, sanctification is described as the process by which believers are made holy through the work of the Holy Spirit. Calvin emphasizes that sanctification is a continuous process that begins with justification and continues throughout the believer’s life. It involves a transformation that aligns believers more closely with the image of Christ, who is Himself our wisdom, righteousness, and sanctification.

“Be holy, for I am holy,” says the Lord. But we have fallen short of His glory. Our righteousness is like filthy rags before Him. How can sinful men have a right standing before God? That is where the gospel comes in: in Christ, we have the righteousness of God. Listen now to this exposition on the latter part of chapter 1 of the first letter to the Corinthians.

In the earlier part of the first epistle to the Corinthians, we see that the Apostle Paul argues that the wisdom of this world is folly to God and the wisdom of God is folly to this world. But what does it mean that Christ became wisdom for us who believe?
