  • The Story Chapter 5: New Commands and a New Covenant
What comes to mind when you think about “The 10 Commandments?” Many might think of the popular movie, Cecile B. Demille or Charlton Heston. While the story of how the commandments came to be might make for a good movie, the commandments have found their way into our laws and regulations and are considered by many Christians as life’s “Rules Of The Road.” Four of the commands address the relationship with God, and six address the relationship with others. We can learn several things illustrated in the story about how God interacted with Israel from enslavement in Egypt to their delivery and subsequent wanderings. God delivered Israel before giving them the law; we obey God because within His commands we discover deliverance; in obedience we become God’s special treasure and part of His holy nation.

What do you do when you're in a tight spot? We’ve all been there—at the corner of insecurity and don’t know what to do—the tight spot. This is where Moses found himself when God called him to lead his fellow Israelites out of Egypt. He made all sorts of excuses and came up with reasons why he wasn’t the right candidate for the job. After God countered each of Moses’ reasons with solutions, Moses finally said "O Lord, please send someone else to do it." Whoops! Then once Moses led the Israelites out of Egypt, they began to look back and long for the slavery that they despised once the out-of-bondage journey got a little rough for their liking. Do you believe that God can help you out of a tight spot? Yes, he can. We must receive God’s grace—believe that he can help you without looking back and longing for the past. Trust God and know that he has a plan in his own good time...he is the ultimate tight spot remover. Step out in faith by taking your eyes off of your problems and looking to God. • The Story Chapter 3: Joseph: From Slave to Deputy Pharaoh
The story of Joseph is one of love, hatred, human trafficking, deception, grief, and ultimately—victory! Have you ever felt that things were definitely not working in your favor and that you couldn’t even depend on your family? That was Joseph. Joseph was loved by his father and hated by his brothers who deceived their father Jacob, by suggesting that Joseph had been killed by a wild animal, when in truth, he had been sold to traders on their way to Egypt. However, God had an ultimate plan for Joseph’s life that no one could circumvent—no matter how hard they tried. Joseph’s years in Egypt had its ups and downs and through it all, he didn’t lose faith. He rose to prominence in Egypt and eventually faced his brothers again. They were afraid that he would seek revenge but he reassured them in Genesis 50:19-20: “But Joseph said to them, “Don’t be afraid. Am I in the place of God? You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives.” Remember that God has a plan for your life although you might not understand why certain things happen. Don't lose faith. Believe that God has the ultimate plan.

Hebreos 11:1-12, Romanos 4, Galatas 3

  • The Story Chapter 2: God Builds a Nation
After God expelled Adam and Eve from the perfect garden, the earth’s population grew and as it grew, the hearts of humans were such a disappointment that “The Lord regretted that he had made human beings on the earth, and his heart was deeply troubled. So the Lord said, “I will wipe from the face of the earth the human race I have created—and with them the animals, the birds and the creatures that move along the ground—for I regret that I have made them.” Genesis 6:6-7. God brought a flood upon the earth that destroyed every living thing, only saving Noah and his family along with the animals he brought into the ark. The second chapter of The Story picks up with God telling Abram (who was from the line of Noah’s son, Shem) to leave his familiar country to go to another land—promising that he would make him a great nation even before Abram had his first child. At this time, Abram and his wife were what we would consider senior citizens when God promised an heir. Abram was 100 and his wife was 90. They, of course, scoffed at the very idea, but God is not to be taken lightly! Listen to the rest of the story...

  • The Story Chapter 1: Creation-The Beginning of Life as We Know It
“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” Genesis 1:1. Just imagine the beginning of life as we know it! The first chapters of Genesis take readers through the stages of creation as the world came to be—a world designed for us and made perfect by God. Human existence in this perfect world came to a halt with the entrance of “the serpent” who convinced Adam and Eve, the first humans, that they could achieve even greater perfection and become like the creator. Thus starts “The Story”—a journey through the Bible that inspires us to become better acquainted with God’s story and how our stories intersect with God. You’re invited to be part of the journey as you listen to the sermons based on The Story...the story of scripture...the story of your life!
