Today we are joined by Dr. Saraswathi Vedam, Professor of Midwifery at the University of British Columbia, Lead Investigator of the Birth Place Lab, and one of the most influential figures in global perinatal health equity. Over 40 years as a clinician-scientist, she has developed the tools that now measure respect, autonomy, and mistreatment in childbirth in 64 countries. Her team’s work won the National Quality Forum Innovation Prize in 2017. She leads the CIHR-funded Justice and Equity in Perinatal Services Hub, and in 2025 received the Lifetime Visionary Award from the American College of Nurse-Midwives.

Today we are joined by Carrie Low, a sexual assault survivor, activist, and one of the most tenacious advocates for survivors’ rights in the Canadian criminal justice system. Carrie is the founder of Survivors for Change and Empowerment in Nova Scotia, and her story is documented in the CBC investigative podcast Carrie Low Vs. In early 2022, she co-founded My Voice, My Choice, a national survivor-led initiative whose advocacy directly contributed to the passage of Bill S-12, landmark reforms to publication ban laws under the Criminal Code that give survivors back control over their own names and stories.

Dr. Haag’s work focuses on supporting women survivors of intimate partner violence-related brain injury, a largely hidden but critical public health issue.

Many survivors of intimate partner violence may also be living with the lasting effects of brain injury caused by blows to the head, face, or neck, and through strangulation. This webinar is designed to equip professionals with the knowledge and tools they need to recognize the signs, respond effectively, and provide meaningful support.

Dr. Haag brings not only deep research expertise but also lived experience, making her perspective both powerful and impactful. Her work continues to shape awareness, education, and improved outcomes for survivors across Canada.
