The theme of the highly anticipated lecture was the celebration of civic heritage and spirit during which Hazel McCallion provided a self assessment of her 25 years as Mayor, as of November 2003, and reflected on her many years of service in public office. Settlers began arriving in the early 1800s, and Toronto Township, now known as Mississauga is often referred to as the city of villages. While most cities expand outward from a central settlement, Mississauga is unique in that it’s made up of crossroad of hamlets and villages, each with their own distinctive history, that were joined together in amalgamation to form the city.
