Publisher's Summary:
Herland takes the listener on a fascinating journey into a utopian society comprised entirely of women. A society with no men also means no conflict, resulting in a war-free existence. It is a perfect world, but only if you are female.
Three men set out on a journey into uncharted territory to discover for themselves if the legend of an all-female society is a myth or actually a reality. Tracking down the mythical realm of women poses plenty of challenges, but what they ultimately find is both enchanting and frightening.
In an age when feminism was still considered a fringe concept, Charlotte Perkins Gilman's many works ventured into unfamiliar territory. She was not only a novelist but wrote a number of nonfiction titles, as well as poetry. For feminists of the era, Mrs. Gilman was considered a role model due to her unorthodox and progressive ideas.

Is this even legal?
My received copy of Herland had many problems. First of all, they promote their book as being "illustrated" one of the reasons that I was most interested in this version. The pictures look like they were copied from google and are so blurry it is unable to make out what is pictured. The type is awful I was disgusted to find absolutely no insertions between paragraphs. Ultimately, this is not from a real publishing out, it was printed a couple of days before my order, is this even legal??
Not the worst thing I have ever read (but pretty close)
Not the worst thing I have ever read (but pretty close). A must read if you care to understand how far feminist theories have come since their beginnings, or if you are a misogynist....Gilman has a few golden moments, but overall this story is problematic. Interesting concept though. And far beyond her time!
Good, not great
Herland is a feminist utopia, and like all utopian novels, presents its arguments for the lifestyle it presents as a perfect world for its inhabitants. It's well-written, avoids didactic preaching, and presents an interesting story. It is a classic, in a sense, but it also tends to stereotyping its characters.
An interesting story about sex roles that anticipates Pohl's Day ...
An interesting story about sex roles that anticipates Pohl's Day Million and Sturgeon's Venus Plus X. Perhaps it is not as well known as those because a woman wrote it. The story is about a country where only women live. They reproduce without the aid of men (not really explained how). The country is cut off from the world until three men visit it in an airplane.
At the end of the book the three men marry women from Herland and have unexpected problems.
