Welcome to the Jungle

Thereâs something about the character Tarzan that still resonates with people today even more than 100 years after he was originally created. Television shows, radio shows, feature films, comic book adaptations, animated shows, and animated features have all contributed to this mythic character, while also mostly leaving some of the more unpleasant stuff aside. It can certainly be troubling to some to go back to the source of it all, Tarzan of the Apes, only to discover that it is chock full of sentiments that todayâs readers may take great offense to. The discussion of racism and sexism in this novel, and frankly, of many thousands of novels written in less enlightened times than our own, is valid and worth having, but I wonât be having it here. Readers sensitive to those topics may want to proceed into Tarzan with caution or not at all. That saidâ

I had a great time reading Tarzan of the Apes, but it is absolutely a pulp novel. The plot is well known to most, the details probably less so, but there isnât anything ground breaking going on here. Or is there? Itâs hard to say. On one hand, like I pointed out above, Tarzan has been around for over a hundred years now. That certainly doesnât rank him in Shakespearean terms, but outside of Sherlock Holmes, Zorro, or James Bond, I canât think of many other characters that have persisted quite like that, barring the entrance of comic book super heroes. Tarzan serves as a kind of model man for young boys â like the ultimate Boy Scout. The boy Tarzan, like many boys, is born and feels mundane until that first look in the water reveals he is actually special. And over time, he learns to do things others canât. This is the super hero origin part of the story, and it begins early on. Tarzan becomes capable of physical feats that mere men are not while at the same time, the other side of him becomes the learned English gentleman. In many ways, he foreshadows Bruce Wayne and Batman, except the disguise for Tarzan is absent. He lost his parents, was an outsider, trains his mind and body to super human levels, then re-enters society as a regular man. Outside of the losing your parents part, it isnât hard to imagine this journey as that of a young boyâs fantasy. That alone doesnât seem like quite enough to carry a dime story novel for a century though. Is there more? I feel like the further men of our current culture are separated from their traditional primitive roles of hunter gatherer, the greater the need and difficulty finding value and meaning in oneâs own existence becomes.

One of GKC's lesser known books. A detective story of sorts, the writing is brilliant and the plot amazingly unexpected!

Anyone who has read Chesterton and hasn't read 'Manalive' has no idea what they're missing. Vintage GKC, with all the normal sparkling style!

A Masterful Rendition of a Much Loved Classic

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

The production of this version of "Little Women" is truly masterful and enjoyable. As one of my favorite books and authors I did expect to enjoy the audiobook already, but not to this extent. The only reason I didn't give a 5 start performance rate, is that at the beginning of the second part of this audiobook, there were long pauses after some of the sentences which were a little annoying. If the audiobook continued throughout with this problem I don't think I would have been able to finish listening to it. However after a few minutes, the narration went back to the usual pace and made it very enjoyable again.

Review

This is the most marvellous recording of a famous classic work. I can't praise it highly enough it is just so good. I read the book at school over 50 years ago and it left a lasting impression on me. This recording is a joy to listen to. Having so many actors reading each part is just beyond wonderful as it brings the story to life in a way that would never be possible with one narrator. I am so glad I was able to listen to it and bring some childhood memories back to life.

Can motivate childeren to do good

This book has a lot of moral lessons that can encourage children to do the right thing. Each character in the book has something a child can relate to, for there are many characters described in the book. Especially Dan, one of the main characters, who was a bully through out half the book. A little bit of comedy, a couple morals, can really motivate a child to change into a new light. This book deserves five stars.

Generally uninspiring

Maybe it's the time in which I'm reading Fitzgerald, but I'm not at all as impressed. I've recently read The Great Gatsby and TSOP, and although his style is generally poetic and conversational, with some beautifully turned phrases, all in all I find it pretentious and boring. I'm almost 50, so the angst of youth has long abated, which no doubt lends to my dissatisfaction. Also, in today's world, with all the problems and ills of society, the subject matter seems frivolous. But maybe that's just what you need. If so, this one is for you!

Okay for his first book

I don't know why this was a big hit in the 20s. Perhaps because it gave some in site of the wealthy society of the times. I found it rather boring and it dragged on. Fitzgerald wrote much better stuff later on.

I read it because I have never read Fitzgerald. Current authors more engaging. Won't do a follow up Fitzgerald soon

I felt like I was at war

How would I behave and feel if thrust into battle? Easy to declare that one is patriotic and in agreement with a cause, to get in line and sign up, but how about the day in and day out part of battle? The waiting, the social intercourse with fellow fighters, the gear, following without question a commander, could I do that? How does the average 19-23 year old feel in those situations? This book conjures up thoughts, feelings, emotions that put you on the front line. Well written and a good story, the killer combo.

A Reflection Upon Man's Emotions During Battle

This is not a book about a specific person, or about a specific battle. Our protagonist isn't even given a name, age or home, save during his musings back to when he quit seminary school (indicating probably about 18 years old, and from the Northeast), and bade farewell to his mother, who called him Henry. We meet "the youth", as he's called throughout, while he's waiting to be sent to battle for the first time. The youth must have been a Northern soldier, and the battle must have been in Virginia; other than that, this book is more generic with regard to events, and about emotions, changes in soldiers, and their reactions to events.

Halfway through this book: "The youth took note of a remarkable change in his comrade since those days of camp life upon the river bank. He seemed no more to be continually regarding the proportions of his personal prowess. He was not furious at small words that pricked his conceits. He was no more a loud young soldier. There was about him now a fine reliance...."

Toward the end of the battle: "...The lieutenant, also, was unscathed in his position at the rear. He had continued to curse, but it was not with the air of a man who was using his last box of oaths..."

At the end of the book: "A specter of reproach came to him. There loomed the dogging memory of the tattered soldier - he who, gored by bullets and faint for blood, had fretted concerning an imagined wound in another; he who had loaned his last of strength and intellect for the tall soldier; he who, blind with weariness and pain, had been deserted in the field..."

A powerful reflection upon the changing of a man during the course of a battle. It's slow reading, because it does warrant reflection.

A nostalgic trip.

Iâve read this book a long time ago along with The Adventures of Tom Sawyer I was 15 years old or maybe even less, after I retired I found myself wanting to remember what it was to read Mark Twain again and it was great, these books ware entertaining and enriching for a 15 year old and for that 15 years old now retired is was an uplifting nostalgic trip. It I had to use only one word to describe my experience using the teenâs vocabulary it would have to be âawesomeâ.

Twain easily keeps up with today's authors. this book was way better than I ever expected. I'm surprised that the subject matters, and descriptions.

Anything by Mark Twain is often hailed as a classic. That's why I chose to get this book.

Unfortunately, I haven't been able to appreciate Mark Twain's writing, and this book didn't change my opinion. There are some high points in the story, but most of it was a slog.

Classic

The classic story of Chingachgook and Uncas, Last of the Mohicans brings the story alive, with great narrative, character development and insights - though culturally and time limited - into the relationships between First Nations and the British and French at the time of the French and Indian War. A classic.

My 9 year old couldn't stop reading. We did a lot of research trying to get a copy that was going to be worthwhile and this exceeded our expectations.

Nice edition for young readers.

Very fine edition for young readers. Very well illustrated in hardbound. No dust jacket but a kid would probably just tear it anyway. All in all a very good way to introduce young readers to this classic.

Classic read

Cooper's tale of 1757 is not only a classic it is also a great description of that period of American history which defined the course of the nation.

I loved it then

I last read "Last of the Mohicans" when I was six years old. I loved it then, and I got to love it again. It is window into a segment of US history that helped define our nation, minus the spin.
