“You show that you are my intimate friends when you obey all that I command you.”
I don’t want to do this passage of scriptures in John 15 any injustice because they are absolutely powerful and in fact the motto of many reading this today. But I just want to point out that what Jesus didn’t say in vs. 13 is, “If you want to be one of my friends you have to do everything I say”. I mean what kind of friend would that be. I can just picture some elementary school kids out on the playground and someone says, “hey, do y’all want to be my friends”. A child responds, “uh, ok”. So the first child says, “ok, just do whatever I tell you and this could be the beginning of a beautiful friendship”. Most likely child two says, “uhhh, no thanks” and runs off to play tether ball.
The fact is, we don’t do things for our friends because they command us to but because we’d do anything we can for our friends! Jesus was talking about the intimacy and closeness of the friendship with His disciples. And because they were so close to Him he was saying to them, “look I’m telling you the secrets that my Father is telling me”. This in and of itself shows the intimacy of the relationship.
Another way to think of this is if a coworker asked me to pick something up for them at the store and drop it by on my way home from work, the chances I do that are less likely than if it was for a friend. I mean maybe I would, but there would need to be a lot of questions answered first. But if my friend asked me, I would in turn ask them if there is anything else they need! And if I happen to see their favorite ice cream, because I know what that is as their close friend, I might just go ahead and grab that for them too!
Hermanos, this is the kind of relationship that Jesus is calling us into! And I might note, this is the kind of friend he is asking us to be as well. I urge you to read the entire passage of John 15:12-17 but what I want to say is, this is not trivial. Go deeper in your relationship with Jesus and with your brothers.
