After taking a few weeks to read passages related to Easter, we pick up the study at chapter 9. There is still much controversy surrounding Jesus' teaching between the people who embrace his words and others, including the Pharisees, who oppose his teaching and believe Jesus is an imposter. The chapter concludes with Jesus’ teaching on the type of judgment he will pronounce. It is judgment grounded in discernment and knowledge of who believes and has received the light of the Gospel.

The claims that Jesus makes in chapter 8 are stunning. The people listening to his teachings were forced to consider what he said and either choose to believe the truth or deny the reality of who Jesus was. Another powerful declaration made by Jesus in this chapter is the reference to truth and freedom. A true disciple of Jesus is somebody who embraces his teaching and, as a result, will experience true freedom.

At some point, you may have found yourself in this situation—outdoors, in blazing heat, and you’ve run out of water. As you think about that experience, listen to Jesus’ words: “let anyone who is thirsty, come to me and drink.” As we look at John 7 this week, we will explore this invitation from Jesus to learn what it means and the difference it can make in our lives right now.

What are you hungry for? Maybe that’s a question you’ve heard recently before mealtime. It’s a question that immediately gets us thinking about food. As it turns out, it also a question related to one of the most famous scenes in Jesus’ ministry. When we look at John 6 on Sunday, we will see that this question actually addresses our deepest sense of purpose and meaning. At the core of who you are, it’s a question you are answering in some way right now.

It’s important that we read the Bible for more than information and correct theological interpretations. Chapter 5 of John's Gospel reminds us to see Jesus for who he is and thoughtfully respond with praise, adoration, surrender, and obedience.

Interestingly and astonishingly, the first time Jesus declares that he is the Messiah is in the conversation with the Samaritan woman.
