This week, we will look at Jesus’ entrance to Jerusalem, as we prepare to celebrate Easter in a few days. Even if we are very familiar with the story, there are mistakes we can make in celebrating it’s significance. To understand those mistakes, and how we can avoid them, join us for our services on Palm Sunday.

You are probably familiar with 1 Corinthians 13; you have heard the words “love is patient, love is kind” used in wedding ceremonies. Arguably, this is the most famous passage in Paul’s letters. Yet, while we have heard these lines before, what exactly was Paul getting at? How does this portrait of love relate to the experiences of the Christians in Corinth, and what lessons does this passage have for us? To answer those questions, join us this Sunday as we continue our study of 1 Corinthians.

As Paul addresses questions raised by the Corinthian church, he turns to the issue of spiritual gifts. In 1 Cor. 12, he challenges us to see that every Christian is gifted. Do you realize, that if you are a follower of Christ, you have a role in his ongoing mission? Furthermore, Paul shows that utilizing our gifts is not to be done in isolation. We are actually dependent on one another, as we follow Jesus.

Paul calls out the inconsistencies in the church’s observance of the Lord’s Supper. They are observing this meal in a manner that reinforces social status distinctions. In other words, their method is inconsistent with the meaning of the meal. The true nature of this meal reveals our shared identity and our shared destiny. It’s an invitation to remember what we have in common.

As Paul addresses issues of dress codes in public worship, he also addresses themes of gender and marriage. In doing so, he invites us to see the beauty in God’s design of humanity as male and female. As we navigate cultural debates about gender and sexuality, this passage invites us to frame those conversations in the broader storyline of God’s redemptive plan.

In concluding the discussion on idol food, Paul warns against the dangers of idolatry. The willingness of some to participate in pagan celebrations reveals a complacency that is dangerous spiritually. Paul returns to the Corinthian slogan: “everything is lawful” (v. 23). Once again, he challenges them to see that they have a truncated view of Christian freedom. Paul highlights two principles: 1) flee idolatry, and 2) pursue God’s glory.

Although “freedom” may not be a term some associate with Christianity, the Apostle Paul argues that it’s central to the Christian message. However, what does this freedom actually look like? What does it take to embody Christian freedom well? These are questions that Paul answers, as we continue our study of 1 Corinthians.

Paul addresses the issue of food offered to idols; it’s another issue that’s been raised by the Christians in Corinth. In responding to their questions, Paul gives guidance on how to make decisions in “gray areas.” Paul’s response reveals that, due to our conscience, we may have different views on certain topics. So, we should be intentional in shaping our conscience by Scripture. In handling gray areas, we must recognize both our freedom and our responsibility. In making decisions, it’s helpful to ask: What does Scripture say? What does my conscience say? How does this affect others?

This week includes Valentine’s Day. Yet, even as we celebrate the joys of love, we also have to admit that relationships can be messy and painful. As people became followers of Christ in Corinth, they had all sorts of questions about marriage, singleness, and divorce. Paul answers these questions in 1 Corinthians 7. We will see how he responds and learn one principle that applies to all of us—whether we are single or married.

As Paul addresses issues in the Corinthian church, he challenges us to understand that Christ transforms our approach to everyday life. In chapter 6, he discusses civil lawsuits and temple prostitution; along the way, he argues that followers of Christ have a new identity and a new framework for making decisions.
