What happens when your child’s healing journey becomes the catalyst for your own?
In the very first episode of Herstory Is Medicine, I’m joined by Ryanne—a storyteller, activist, and practitioner of traditional Curanderismo and ancestral plant and amphibian medicines.
In 2019, Ryanne’s 10-year-old son was diagnosed with stage four cancer. As she walked alongside him through his cancer journey, she experienced firsthand the life-saving role of Western medicine while also beginning to question what other layers of healing were needed for her son, herself, and her family.
What began as a mother doing everything she could for her child became a catalyst for Ryanne’s own healing journey.
It led her back to ancestral knowledge, traditional healing practices, plants, and teachings that were nearly lost within her family. Today, her work is rooted in Mexica and Andean-Amazonian teachings and centers on collective healing, decolonization, sovereignty, and the remembrance of ancestral traditions.
In this deeply personal conversation, we talk about motherhood, her son’s cancer journey, the relationship between Western and traditional medicine, reconnecting with ancestral wisdom, and what it means to carry these traditions forward with humility, respect, and responsibility.
Ryanne’s story doesn’t end with her own healing. What she began reclaiming for herself eventually became something she could bring into her family and community.
This conversation is about more than healing. It’s about remembering.
Because sometimes the story that changes your life becomes the medicine you carry forward.
