Gravity Falls — a successor?

Now that Gravity Falls is gone, my kids are wondering if there’s any reason left to flip over to Disney XD anymore. One thing’s for sure — it’s not going to be “Pickle and Peanut.” They’re downright horrified by that show!

HE’s super-proud, and he shares his enthusiasm with you over all things Star Wars LEGOS in this episiode.

About the Lego AT-AT

* Includes 5 with assorted weapons and an accessory: AT-AT Driver, General Veers, Snow trooper Commander and 2 Snow troopers

* Features a moving head with a cockpit for 2 and 2 spring-loaded shooters, possible legs and an opening body with switch-operated trap door

* Weapons include a blaster pistol and 3 blaster rifles Also includes an electro binoculars element

* Measures over 12″ high, 12″ long and 4″ wide

I’m gonna be honest with you — this was a real challenge for Max to assemble. He was determined to do this one without my help. And he got himself backed into a corner more than once. But every time he did, he came and got me for help… we backtracked… and re-built from the last place we were sure of. In the end, the pride on his face was well-worth all of the frustration that went into getting there.

It’s the Pokemon 20th anniversary, and they’re celebrating two decades of catching-em-all, and this newly minted 10-year-old couldn’t be happier!

About Pokemon 20th anniversary

So there’s a lot of stuff going on for the Pokemon 20th anniversary that you should be aware of. For starters, every month, GameStop will be giving out free download cards that enable you to get Pokemon that you might not have been able to snag yet. Max tells me that this is a Very Big Deal.

Also, Pokemon is re-releasing its first three games — Pokemon Red, Yellow and Blue — for the 3DS. Those games were available previously only for Gameboy units… or desktop emulators. We’ve already downloaded Red and Yellow. There will be reports forthcoming, rest assured.

And we’re certain that’s not all that’s in store for us this year. It’s amazing to me how excited my ten-year-old can get over a 20-year-old 8-bit side-scroller, but I’m telling you… this thing has him enthralled.

In his case, the present was Super Mario Maker — which he immediately utilized to make his father’s life a living Hell. That kid absolutely delights in making nigh-impossible Mario levels and then gently enticing me to “give it a try.” You know… the same way Lucy used to convince Charlie Brown that, this time, he really was going to kick that football.

About Super Mario Maker

Super Mario Maker is a side-scrolling platform game creation system and video game developed and published by Nintendo for the Wii U game console, and released worldwide in September 2015. Players may create and play their own custom levels based on Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World and New Super Mario Bros. U, and share them online. Over time, new editing tools are unlocked, allowing players to download and play levels designed by other players. Please note: This game is available only for the WiiU game system.

Star Wars The Force Awakens as a teaching tool

From a parent’s perspective, Star Wars The Force Awakens is an excellent opportunity to talk about things like sexism and racism in terms that are real-world and significant to them. For example, in this podcast, we discussed how some fans were upset that one of the main characters was a woman and another was black. It was a way to discuss these issues in a way that they could relate to — and that’s not always so easy to do.

Back on the fanboy side of things, we discuss whether Kylo Ren was the most powerful Sith Lord we’ve seen thus far. He’s definitely more powerful than Darth Maul. But could he have stood toe-to-toe with Vader? We discuss it!

And I secretly hope that my experience with my soon-to-be-teenage sons goes a little better than Han Solo’s.

We know the movie is still a long ways off, but we can’t help discussing it. Those new LEGO sets based on the movie aren’t helping matters any, either.

About Captain America Civil War

The next installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (number 13!) is also a tie-in to one of the comics’ most popular storylines – Civil War. In the Marvel comics version of the Civil War, superheroes are forced to choose whether to sign the Superhero Registration Act — which will, among other things, make their secret identities a matter of record. This splits the superhero community down the middle, with some eagerly signing up while others desperately resist. Significantly, Captain America (anti-Registration) dies in the comics version of the story. This one is bound to have a metric-ton of heroes — and villains — duking it out. It’s bound to be an instant classic.
