Nickelodeon was a wild place in 1989. The channel that began its life as “Pinwheel” in 1977 was the first cable network for children. Originally programmed mostly with variety and game shows geared towards and staring children, not much had changed by the late 80s. In that time, the now rebranded Nickelodeon added some animated series from the UK and Japan and some live action comedy and drama series. Many of these “new” shows had already been on the air for years on other channels. But it didn’t really matter. Most of them were aimed at young children, and as anyone who’s raised a child will tell you, they’ll watch just about anything. But Nickelodeon was looking to expand its audience to include teens.
Enter 1989 and a new show about the teenage staff of a dude ranch in Arizona called “Hey Dude”…
Hey Dude is an American Western comedy series that aired from July 14, 1989 to August 30, 1991, with a total of 65 half-hour episodes produced over five seasons. The show was broadcast on the Nickelodeon network, and aired reruns on Nickelodeon until early 1999, and on TeenNick since late 2011. Hey Dude was Nickelodeon’s second original live action television series, following the 1984 series Out of Control.
