BORROWED SPARKS is the solo endeavor of Nashville’s Mike Bay. A seasoned guitarist with a broad range of session and performance experience, the singer/songwriter’s Americana rock sound first coalesced in his 2020 release, The Prettiest One Left.
Acclaimed by Underground Music Collective as a “prime cut of rock and roll,” The Prettiest One Left is a testament to Bay’s foundations. The deep-rooted influence of artists like the Eagles and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers is palpable, and heightened by resonating elements of folk and punk rock.
Later that year, Borrowed Sparks reached emotive new heights with a deluxe version of the record, which featured acoustic reimaginings of three previous tracks.
This exploration of the album culminated in 2021 with the release of Borrowed Sparks’ first live performance series, The Smoakstack Sessions. The revisitation included recordings of three songs from the original tracklist as well as a cover of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers’ “Refugee.”
Now, Borrowed Sparks’ next iteration is here. Vehemently faithful to Bay’s established stylistic inclinations, his next album, Let a Little Light In, is less a progression than a transcendence into his post-pandemic state of mind—and a must-listen for fans of The Gaslight Anthem, Bruce Springsteen, and Frank Turner alike.

Part of a new generation of bands formed over Zoom and FaceTime, Tarnish began in 2020 when guitarist/vocalist Karl Forster and bassist Dane Carlson started working on tracks despite living over 400 miles apart. The California-based group, now rounded out by drummer Jack Breger and guitarist Natty P, comes from a diverse musical background with influences all over the genre spectrum, but with a shared love for the 2010s pop punk/emo sound. With introspective lyrics and hard-hitting riffs, Tarnish has been working to craft a signature sound that stands out from the crowd.

Recorded with Ben Hirschfield (The Story So Far, Mom Jeans., No Pressure), their most recent single, “Feeling The Same,” explores new territory for the band, experimenting with time signatures and song structure. Coming off the success of the poppier, yet similarly intense, “Cold Walks to the Liquor Store” in July, the juxtaposition between these singles showcases the band’s range as they gear up for the release of their next EP. The band continues to build off their success in their respective Sacramento and San Diego local scenes, and has had the privilege of performing in venues such as the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco and the Observatory in Santa Ana. Actively seeking new ways to expand their audience, Tarnish is eager to grow as artists and performers, while still maintaining the sincerity of their work.

Austin Texas quartet GENTLEMEN ROGUES celebrate aggressive guitar pop anthems — bearing the influences of The Replacements, Superdrag, Jawbreaker, and similar visionaries — and have been gaining momentum and increased attention. Since their debut in 2011, the band — Danny Dunlap (guitar/vocals), Josh Power (drums), John Christoffel (guitar), and Dave Hawkins (bass, vocals) — have honed their hooks over numerous singles, EPs, and the 2022 full-length collection, A History of Fatalism. Springsteen sideman Steven van Zandt hand-picked their single “Do the Resurrection!” as the “Coolest Song in the World” on his SiriusXM radio show, Little Steven’s Underground Garage. Garnering heavy airplay, listeners worldwide agreed, voting “Do the Resurrection!” as one of the top ten “Coolest Songs of 2021.” Gentlemen Rogues have supported diverse acts like the Lemonheads, Smoking Popes, the Dandy Warhols, Mrs Magician, and Riverboat Gamblers on stages across the U.S. and the UK. In recent years Gentlemen Rogues opened for indie-punk icons Superchunk and Bob Mould, who personally selected the band to provide sole support on the Texas leg of his Distortion and Blue Hearts tour.
