“Ye are gods”B, Keith Chadwell December 2014 blog Joh 10:31-36 Then the Jews took up stones again to stone him.Jesus answered them; Many good works have I shewed you from my Father;for which of those works do ye stone me? The Jews answered him, saying, For a good work we stone thee not; but for blasphemy; and because that thou, being a man, makest thyself God. Jesus answered them; Is it not written in your law: “I said, Ye are gods ” ? If he called them gods, unto whom the word of God came, and the scripture cannot be broken; Say ye of him, whom the Father hath sanctified, and sent into the world, “Thou blasphemest”; because I said, I am the Son of God? The issue with the Jews was certainly their disbelief and perhaps shock and dismay that any flesh and blood “man” would call himself a “Son of God”. Today we, who call ourselves Christians, see this as not only very scriptural but it is our testimony. We generally understand that by faith we are born of the Spirit and also are born of a woman (flesh and blood). Albeit, we readily admit our Spiritual birth is only the down payment on the full manifestation which, somehow, is yet to come. Still,....this is where we run into the same problem the Jews did in John chapter ten; We have never, yet, fully experienced the reality of a company of fully manifest “Christ in us, the hope of glory” Christians. Neither had the Jews of John chapter ten ever seen, even one, such until Jesus. Then Jesus, who had been living among them for years, was manifest to them and they couldn't or wouldn't accept Him as “Son of God”. History and tradition can be wonderful, but it can also be the choke chain around the neck of God's people when it comes to anything new that God initiates. It has been said that; “familiarity breeds contempt”. I am thinking that the Jews had a case of contempt for the lowly Jesus who had grown up among them. How sad it is that even today “the Christ in us” has become a derision to the world and, sadly, even to some in the body of Christ, who have elevated themselves over the lowly in status, according to man's reckoning. Only to those who will humble themselves under the mighty hand of God will He exalt, in His time. 1Pe 5:6 Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time: God has provided us with scripture that indicates this “manifestation of the Sons of God” will happen. There are various views of this; the when, where, how, etc.. At best, we still only know in part. When it actually happens, it probably will be different than most Christians expect. When this does happen, how will we receive the truth? As the 5 foolish virgins? As the Jews in John chapter ten? However and whenever this happens, there will be those who will be eagerly praying for and awaiting this glorious liberation of creation and the manifestation of “The Sons of God”? I have quoted “the law”, below; from Jesus' reference in John 10:34. Jesus was simply quoting from Psalms 82:6 when he addressed those Jews who were about to stone Him for saying that He was “the Son of God” : Johnn 10:34 “ Is it not written in your law: (Psalms 82:6) “I said, Ye are gods ” ? It is important to note here, that the quote from the law; “I said, ye are gods” was not addressed to the Jews. According to the scripture text (Psalms 82); “God standeth in the congregation of the mighty, and He judgeth among the gods.” thus indicating God was talkin
