Publisher's Summary:
Daisy Gumm Majesty, spiritualist to folks with more money than sense, can scarcely believe that her best client wants her to get her spiritual control, Rolly, to appear at a séance in a speakeasy. Bad enough that Daisy made up Rolly when she was ten, but now Rolly has to perform at a séance for a bunch of murdering gangsters?
When the place is raided, Daisy's troubles multiply.
Add to the mix Daisy's nemesis (and her husband's best friend) Detective Sam Rotondo; Vicenzo Maggiori, leader of the bootlegging racket in the area; and Flossie Mosser, befuddled floozy; and you have a rollicking adventure that Daisy isn't sure she's going to survive.

Super new characters
I did enjoy this one - especially Flossie's story. I really enjoy how Duncan's main character, Daisy, carries herself. She has such high morals for such a young lady in the most difficult of marital situations, but she has such an innocent conscience that she gets herself into so much trouble. At first, some of her trite repetitions were annoying, but then, as one gets into the 'spirit' of the Prohibition Era, it makes sense, as that is precisely how we can imagine her speaking. What would she have done in the age of computers!!! Yet she is thorough and does her research well, courtesy of her local library!
Duncan does a great job of quickly bringing her readers up to date as to Daisy's situation, in each of her Daisy Gumm Majesty books. Someone starting , even with this one, has a grasp of things immediately, while those of us who are enrapt with the whole series get a quick refresher - a good thing if you aren't reading them back-to-back - which I must admit I am doing.
Normally I review a book upon completion, but am embarrassed to admit that I have not been doing so here. It almost bit me on this one as I don't like to reveal too much about a book so that review readers don't get too much of the story which could spoil it for them. Yet, I have just started Book 6 - and I continue to be intrigued with each one, and have to stop myself from revealing too much.
If you are looking for a relaxing, refreshing read - be sure to read this whole series. We need heroines and a character list such as these - and thank you, too, Alice Duncan, for letting us revisit the new friends as they appear from book to book!
A make-believe psychic takes on 1920s gangsters
The Daisy Gumm Majesty books are lighthearted reading, written first person in a chatty style with a sense of humor. Daisy is a business woman and a working wife during the 1920s when women were not encouraged to be either.
Time and place: 1921, Pasadena, California. Password to the speakeasy just outside the city limits: "Oh you kid."
Think of HIGH SPIRITS as a memoir. Make-believe psychic Daisy Gumm Majesty recalls a spectacularly bad month that starts with a séance in a speakeasy and goes downhill from there.
Daisy's regular clients don't hang out in speakeasies. More likely they can be found in a séance. In this case, the séance takes place in a "speak" and Daisy must do her work seated between two hoods.
It's a disaster waiting to happen but Daisy can't resist the piteous pleas of her best customer, Mrs. Kincaid, whose willful daughter Stacey hangs out at the speakeasy.
