Israel went from finding refuge in Egypt to finding themselves enslaved by the Egyptians. The Egyptians were more powerful than Israel and had a plan to wipe them out. But God had promised to make them into a great nation and God keeps His promises. Like the midwives we need to fear and trust God and not the world around us - no matter how powerful it may seem.

In the face of fierce struggles, Jesus commands His church to respond in three ways: Fear Not; Rejoice; and Be at Peace.

We must be wary of religion when it leans to thinking that religious works can make us clean before God. It is only in seeing that we are naturally unclean that we will run to the saviour. If we don’t see this, we will rely on ourselves in keeping religious works. So, in answer to the question, “Who is defiled?” – all are! But Jesus deals with that. We must resolutely oppose anything that teaches differently.

In God's amazing wisdom and love, He sovereignly planned that the worst act of human evil ever - the murder of Jesus Christ on the cross (enabled by Judas' betrayal) - would simultaneously be the most amazing act of God's love to save His people through the blood of the ultimate Passover Lamb. This all occurred exactly as God said it would in His Word and yet we remain accountable for our sin. But there is hope to be found in Jesus who alone can save us.
