June in Alberta, the morels are out and it's time to put in for your hunting draws. Mike and John discuss options for the coming season and chat about the plan to hunt new country. The Covid Crowds are pushing them into a new area.
Another topic covered is when hunts don't go as planned. About tracking a wounded black bear when there's a grizzly sow and her cubs in the area.
They also discuss their decision to try lead free bullets. Their reasons for this may surprise you!
*NOTE: Please excuse our rookie recording, the fancy Telsec Microspace recording studio threw the crew for a loop with all the snazzy sound boards and mixers. Next time you might even be able to hear Mike!! Sharla is sorry she didn't catch it sooner, next one will be awesome!
This episode of Hunting the Front, the Highlander crew chat about good old fashioned ranchland Whitetail hunting. How whitetails can hide in plain sight, how to get access, and other tidbits of insight for private land hunting.
We hope you enjoy the second episode of the Hunt the Front Series.
Welcome Back!
Hunt the Front, a series highlighting big game hunting on private lands of Alberta.
We have spent a lot of time discussing backcountry hunting on public land, which we love to do. But we also hunt farmland. Some of the most productive hunts have been on private land. Want to see 400+ elk on a hill at first light? Don't have all weekend to hike in search for game? Concerned about personal safety? These are all great reasons to hunt on private land.
On this first episode in the Hunt the Front Series:
Elliot the one antlered elk...
At long last the guys have managed to carve out some time to record a new episode.
Mike and John sit down in the Highland Arms HQ and recap what turned out to be an unusual, but successful hunting season.
We hope you enjoy this fresh episode and thank you all for your continued support

In this episode we sat down with Alex Sheriff to talk about his 2019 Kyrgyzstan sheep hunt. Alex is very much an authority on wild sheep.
He explained to us just how tough and expert the guides were, as well as how hospitable and proud the Kyrgyzstan people are.
This was a tough hunt, with equipment failure, in very austere conditions.
We hope you enjoy hearing his retelling of this truly epic adventure.
The Boys are Back!
The rantings of mad men....
This one goes all over the map. It may offend some and anger others.
The gun ban, racism, the Alberta draw system, beer, the effect of local podcasts on the ability of podcasters to draw their usual muley tags are all talked about.
Mike and John got together (socially distanced of course) for a long over due recording. They give updates on what they have been up to. Mike has been working on an exciting new business venture, while John has spent too much of the lock down turning his garage into a workshop.
The mistress that is Covid 19 comes up in the conversation as well.
We hope you missed us as much as we missed you!! Enjoy!
Welcome back podcast listeners, this episode was recorded live at this year's Boat and Outdoor show here in Calgary. John and Mike sit down at the Cabela's booth with fellow Pro Staff Bree Mason.
Sitting down with a female hunter was an awesome opportunity to get yet another point of view. Asking all our favorite questions, memorable hunts, caliber of choice, gear, top 10 tips and so much more.
Hope you all enjoy this episode. As always we love to hear from our listeners with questions, episode ideas or just stories, email us at [email protected]
WMU 212 is known for a few things, acreages, ranches, and very large elk herds. The herds are well over the province's population objective and so they offer plenty of opportunity to hunters.
Mike and John sit down and discuss Mike's antlerless elk hunt in 212, which happened to be in some of the coldest weather we have seen this winter.
