Segment 3, October 12th, 2024
We’ve heard the stories of disaster in regards to Helene. We’ve also heard about recovery & communities coming together to aid. Sara Bell founded Green River Adventures in 2006 & later added The Gorge Zipline to the portfolio of adventure & recreation in Saluda, NC. This community in Polk County, NC, was impacted by the rising water of the Green River & felled trees throughout.

The devastation of Helene has been documented over the past week. The after affects continue along with the good news of communities coming together to help.
Things You’ll Learn by Listening:
Our thoughts are all on all the communities affected by Helene. The ones “on the hills & in the hollers” that were swept away & those left without power, roads, & homes. The question of “who is my neighbor?” is being answered with the resilience of community support throughout.
You can participate with aid:
Fly Fishing Guiding, Instruction, & Outfitting trips in western North Carolina is a large part of Jesse Brown’s business. Teaching people to fly fish the beautiful waters in this part of the world is special to us. In order to support our local guides & relief efforts in these hardest hit places, we plan on donating 5% of the Fly Fishing Trips Purchased Now through the rest of the 2024 year to Mountain True
This will enable us to continue planning for fly fishing in the future while helping with the impacted areas & people now.

Growing up in New York! Going to college in Boston! Taking on a Thru Hike in 1991! James Smith has quite a resume of outdoor accomplishment & adventure in his career. However, what led him to lead one of the hottest new businesses in the Charlotte-region.James Smith started MYOUTDOORJOY a year & ½ ago & it has enjoyed a large amount of growth in helping people be outdoors, learn, & enjoy travel and adventure via membership.

MYOUTDOORJOY was named because of the recognizing the spread of Smith’s happiness & joy being spread to subscribers and members in learning and experiences outdoors. The goal of building a bridge across to all sorts of people is part of the company.

David Gaskins always brings great information on the big game hunts from the west. His nickname, First Day Dave, came from prior seasons where he & clients have gotten the deer that they wanted on the “first day” with 7-Jay Outfitters in Sundance, Wyoming.

Hayward Douglas, Executive Director of the Foothills Trail Conservancy (FTC) has been a part of this 77-mile footpath since 1989. This replay from 2022 pulled Douglas from a trail maintenance gathering on the trail.Show Highlights:

Mark Rehbein, Development Director for the Bonefish & Tarpon Trust, joins host Bill Bartee to talk about bonefish & tarpon & the science of their population & their conservation. Palmer McIntyre took some time to stop by and visit with host Bill Bartee about her friendship, adventures, & research of the newest North Carolina guidebook, that was just released. The book Trails & Treats: A Hiker and Runners Guide to Great Trails & Good Eats in North Carolina covers four segments & thirty trails across the state. It also features recipes & good places to eat near the featured hikes.McIntyre & Oberlies will both be on-hand at an upcoming Charlotte event at local outfitter & sponsor of the Carolina Outdoors, Jesse Brown’s.

McIntyre grew up in North Carolina & Oberlies lived outside of Chicago before they met in Greensboro. Their goal with the book is to help new people to hiking be engaged while also sharing & reminding iconic places throughout the state with newcomers & natives alike.

Stewart Wallace is a Senior at Myer’s Park High School. Through his youth he’s been a part of lacrosse teams, loves basketball, & being a Scout. He has served his community in different ways including when he was twelve years old with the repair and replacement of basketball rims & nets in local parks. As he approaches the age of eighteen he recently led the charge on an Eagle Project that included the collection & retirement of worn U.S. flags. He spoke with host Bill Bartee about respect, disposal, & the pursuit of the famed Eagle Award from the Boy Scouts of America.

We have one of the healthiest, and most prolific Scouting programs in the United States. One of the reasons is the Mecklenburg County Council of BSA. The Packs, Troops, & Crews that make up the Council continue to evolve as the national organization also changes.
