C’MON C’MON MOVIE REVIEW
“C’mon, C’mon” is the latest film from writer/director Mike Mills (“20th Century Women”). Elegantly shot in black and white, this naturalistic drama stars Joaquin Phoenix as Johnny, a single man and public radio journalist who is interviewing kids all across the country for an upcoming show. Meanwhile, Johnny’s estranged sister Viv (Gaby Hoffmann) is dealing with her husband Paul (Scoot McNairy) who is suffering a mental health crisis in another city. Desperately in need of a babysitter, she reaches out to Johnny who just happens to be in town for the week. Reluctantly, Johnny agrees to take care of Viv’s nine year old son Jesse (newcomer Woody Norman) while she is away. Despite interviewing children all the time, Johnny has no clue how to take care of this strange little person suddenly placed in his care. What happens next is a thoughtful, often humorous meditation on family, parenting, and the memories we hold dear. This could have been a predictable, saccharine story – the kind we’ve all seen before – but Mills and his cast bring their A-game to the material and avoid many of the obvious beats you might expect. Our critics Frank, Wright, Beau and Marco may all be single, cynical and childless but even these curmudgeons were moved by “C’mon, C’mon”. Listen to them discuss a film that’s sure to appear on a lot of this years’ “Best Of” lists.

By day, Marco is a mild-mannered office worker, but by night he is a mild-mannered movie watcher. He does other mild-mannered stuff too.

Frank Calvillo (Highly Suspect Reviews, Screener Squad)
Born and raised in South Texas, Frank currently lives in Austin and has been in love with movies ever since his father showed him some Three Stooges shorts when he was five years old. Today he loves all kinds of film, regardless of era, country, budget or genre. He believes every film has an audience and is at least one person’s favorite movie. After writing for Sight & Sound and Slackerwood, he now writes for Cinapse where his increasingly random taste in all flavors of cinema (from Rashomon to Mars Attacks!) continues to thrive. His ultimate goal is to write a script for his boyhood crush, Michelle Pfeiffer.

Wright Sulek (Screener Squad, Digital Noise, Highly Suspect Reviews, Audio Editor)
Wright hails from the northern suburbs of Dallas, Texas. His passion for filmmaking brought him to Austin to study and make movies. Since then he’s had his hand in acting, writing, and directing his own short films with numerous like-minded film geeks he’s met along his journey. His newest interest has brought him into the podcasting world. He’s co-hosted a few different movie related podcasts such as ‘And Now This’ and ‘The Match Cut’. His current hosting gig is with longtime friend, Eric Samaniego, where they talk shop about the grimiest, trashiest, lost gems of movies on their show, ‘Trash in the Can’. Wright is also hosting reviews with Screener Squad and editing reviews as well.
