CYRANO MOVIE REVIEW

This musical interpretation of the classic play Cyrano de Bergerac by director Joe Wright and writer Erica Schmidt stars Peter Dinklage in the lead, substituting the character’s famous oversized nose for Dinklage’s height as his one source of insecurity. He’s long been in love with his friend Roxanne (Haley Bennett) but assumes she would have no interest in him romantically because of his size. Despite this, he is an accomplished poet and warrior, a captain in the local guard, and a guy who generally not only will take no crap about his differences but has the skill both verbally and physically to back it up. When a handsome young new recruit in the guard named Christian (Kelvin Harrison Jr.) catches the eye of Roxanne (and vice-versa) she begs Cyrano to protect him and he pleads with Cyrano to help him with his words. As good-looking as he is, he’s no poet and Roxanne requires more than just a handsome beau to win her heart. Reluctantly Cyrano becomes the voice of Christian to woo Roxanne. And if you’ve seen the 1987 Steve Martin adaptation Roxanne, well, let’s just say this doesn’t end as happily. Chris, Harmoni, Sarah, and Marco take a crack at this one and find very mixed results.

Born in the wilds of northern Virginia, Chris managed to put all of his survival skills to use and barely escaped with his life to Austin Texas in 1992 where ever since he’s dabbled in everything from plumber’s assistant to sandwich maker, from band to bar management. During this time, a fortuitous friendship sprung up between Chris and young Brian Salisbury, who was also a local film critic, and they merged their forces of will, and their laundry list of ideas for shows, to eventually build this community of critics. While Brian eventually followed his heart to a new family, Chris continues on with a cast of colorful folks from all over the country (and a few others).
