FRANKIE MOVIE REVIEW

Internationally renowned actress Francoise “Frankie” Cremont (played by internationally renowned actress, Isabelle Huppert) has only months to live. Despite her profession, Frankie is no drama queen and she isn’t one for self-pity. Instead, Frankie and her husband Jimmy (a soulful Brendan Gleeson) invite their extended family and friends to the picturesque resort town of Sintra, Portugal where Frankie will break the news, put her affairs in order, and say goodbye to the people she loves. Also on Frankie’s bucket list is marrying her aimless son Paul (Jérémie Renier) to her make-up artist and best friend Irene (Marisa Tomei); too bad Irene’s boyfriend (Greg Kinnear) decided to tag along. Over the course of a single day, every member of Frankie’s large family is forced to examine their past and reevaluate their relationships. Frankie could have easily become a melodramatic, tear-jerking travelogue – think Merchant Ivory by way of the Hallmark Channel – but to his credit, director and co-writer Ira Sachs takes a different approach.
