MARCEL THE SHELL WITH SHOES ON MOVIE REVIEW

From the studio that brought you Uncut Gems, Midsommar, and The Northman comes… a kid’s movie? Well, sort of. Based on the 2010 short by Dean Fleischer-Camp and Jenny Slate, Marcel the Shell with Shoes On is a live action/stop-motion mockumentary about Marcel (voiced by Slate) a one inch tall shell with a single eye, a mouth, and two feet. Once part of a large community of similarly sized, seemingly inanimate objects, Marcel is now all alone, except for his doting grandmother, Nana Connie (Isabella Rossellini). Despite their tiny stature and lack of arms, Marcel and Connie have found a way to live comfortably, albeit secretly, alongside the humans whose home they share. When a documentary filmmaker Dean (Dean Fleischer-Camp) rents the house, he discovers Marcel and decides to interview him for a series of YouTube documentary shorts. When the videos go viral, Dean and Connie encourage Marcel to use his new online fame to help find his missing family. What follows is a sweetly absurd voyage of discovery as Marcel grapples with issues of sudden internet fame, mortality, community, loneliness, and the need to take risks in a big, scary world. Wright, Tessa, and Marco were all impressed by this whimsical tale of a little shell with a big heart and think you should give it a shot.

Well-rounded nerd and artist, Tessa Morrison grew up in the misty mountains of West Virginia and was constantly ridiculed for being a “weirdo.” Then moved to Austin in 2009 where people said the same thing, but in an endearing tone. Tessa works an office day job, creates puppets and fiber art, cosplays, models for gaming and animation studios, and volunteers for various organizations. One of which is the Other Worlds Film Festival, Austin’s first SciFi film fest, working in the capacity of Outreach Director and programmer. Another is local DIY-comedy-wrestling league, Party World Rasslin’, where Tessa scrambles around stage-handing and doing art department nonsense. Wrote and contributed to website and magazine Strange Kids Club for five years reviewing films, video games, and Halloween candy. Co-hosted a Public Access show called Ladies of Fandom.
