ETERNALS MOVIE REVIEW

Director/co-writer Chloé Zhao (“Nomadland”) unexpectedly joins the MCU to take on one of the most sprawling, esoteric, world-building tales in Marvel’s canon, the story of the group of immortals called Eternals, originally created by the legendary Jack Kirby. The ensemble of superpowered beings guides and watches over humanity, but only intervenes with violence when it comes to one specific threat, the beasts called Deviants. After believing they had defeated their monstrous nemesis, they found themselves left to their own devices for centuries. So why has their creator, the god-like Celestial Arishem, not called them home? And after all this time, when the Deviants begin to reappear, why are they so much more powerful than ever before? This any many other considerably more existential questions will be answered (or at least addressed) in “Eternals”. Chris, Danni, Beau, and Mike gather for a discussion on this 26th MCU film and they do not all see eye-to-eye.

NIGHTSHOOTERS MOVIE REVIEW

When a small film crew doing a guerrilla night shoot of a trashy action horror movie in a building scheduled for demolition accidentally witness a gangland murder, they have to bring all their skills to play in order to survive the night against the criminals out for their blood. Fortunately for them, their stunt guy is a genuine badass. And their F/X lady knows a surprising amount about dangerous explosives and corrosives. So, what you got here is a very low budget take on “The Raid” meets “F/X”. And while this certainly could have gone embarrassingly, terribly wrong, director Mark Price and his charismatic crew have made a little diamond in the rough that Chris, Adrian, Ryan, and Lewayne all really hope more people get a chance to see. BECAUSE IT’S FUN, DAMMIT!

Though born and raised in Chicago, this film critic is Mexican to the bone. Adrian has been watching movies since he was a child, many of which might not have been age appropriate. ANTLERS MOVIE REVIEW

Director Scott Cooper (“Black Mass”) takes a sharp lefty turn into horror with the film “Antlers”. The story takes place in a poor mining town, beset with all the unfortunate things that come with impoverished communities. A teacher (Keri Russell) gets involved with one of her young students who is clearly suffering from abuse and neglect. Looking to her sheriff brother (Jesse Plemons) for help, they don’t realize that this child is dealing with something monstrous growing within his own family, and I don’t mean just meth addiction (although yeah, that too). Together they must fight this deadly metaphor with giant horns and save the day. Chris, Matt, Melina, and Tessa take on this one and as horror fans, they found it pretty darn lacking.

Melina first discovered that she carried the nerd gene at the tender age of four following her exposure to a little film called A New Hope. In the twenty-some years that followed, Melina continued to grow into her geek identity through the discovery of Batman, Mst3k, Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings and The Mandalorian. But perhaps her most significant discovery came at the age of fourteen when a night of YouTube mining led her to the review site of Spill.com. Melina became a devoted follower whose fandom did not end with the site’s demise. By then, it had worked its dark magic and left her with a love and appreciation for film criticism that she has yet to shrug.

NIGHT TEETH MOVIE REVIEW

As October comes to an end, it’s time to look back on the spooky outings we’ve had a chance to sample, one of which comes from Netflix: “Night Teeth”. Jorge Lendeborg Jr. stars as Benny Perez, a freelance driver taking over for his brother who’s plunged into a night of vampiric espionage when he’s stuck peddling around vampires Blaire (Debby Ryan) and Zoe (Lucy Fry). A plot to end a long truce with humans and take over the vampire world in one night of carnage with Blaire and Zoe as the tools of destruction has poor Benny fearing for his life, for the life of his brother who leads a coalition to protect the truth, and also weirdly dealing with him having a huge crush on Blaire. With Alfie Allen coming in as the mastermind, does this thriller earn its comparisons to works like “Collateral” and “Vampire: The Masquerade”? Find out as Chad, Davey, and Rae sink their teeth…into “Night Teeth”.

Many words have been used to describe Davey Peppers. Words like “Eh” and “Please go outside, just once”. He studied film and advertising at Southern Illinois University – Carbondale, because two degrees in fields with terrible job placement is better than one, and currently runs the YouTube channel Game Mechanics. He is easily distracted by shiny things and even the most basic passing mention of a movie being sad. He can be found on Twitter as well as staring at a blank wall wondering what the point is, and if his spending so much time staring at walls is the reason he’s not funny.

 

 

Chad Halvorsen (Screener Squad)

Chad Halvorsen currently resides in Milwaukee, WI, where he produces and edits commercials, films, and everything in between. He was always a fan of film/television growing up, spending days in the Summer, making (terrible) home movies with his brothers. Little did he know that passion would carry on into adulthood. Since 2006, Chad has worked for several agencies in various departments. Shooting, producing, editing, production management, directing, and when forced to, writing copy. In 2015, Chad decided to take the big leap and become a freelancer. Since then, he’s produced content for Lyft, AT&T, Target, and Discovery Network. His passion lies in entertaining people, making them feel better, even for a moment. All the pain and suffering of this business is worth it, if even just one person views his work. LOCKE AND KEY SEASON 2 SERIES REVIEW

Based on Joe Hill’s acclaimed comic series, Netflix’s adaptation follows the story of the Locke children. Having lost their father to a deranged killer at the beginning of season 1 (see our review of that season here), the three kids and their mother move to the father’s ancient family home in Massachusetts, a gigantic mansion with many secrets, and many locks. There’s magic afoot as keys keep appearing that not only fit locks in the house, but locks in their own bodies. Supplied with an armory of powers through these, life seems creepy, but fun. Unfortunately, a dark power also wants these keys and the power they provide. Having thought this antagonist defeated at the end of Season 1, it’s quickly revealed that Dodge (the baddie), has merely switched identities, and now manipulates the Lockes from a trusted position within their friend group. More mysteries are unspooled, the flashbacks and the histories of Keyhouse goes back MUCH further, and of course, new keys are discovered with new freaky powers. Chris, Jordan, Neil, and Matt unlocked the secrets and here (with certainly spoiler warnings necessary) they turn the key to see what worked, what didn’t, and what we should be expecting with the rapidly approaching season 3.

Sexy suspense thrillers are the bread and butter of networks like Lifetime. But even with some of that sweet Netflix money and talent from the Mike Flanagan acting troupe, are there any surprises to be had in a type of movie that does exactly what you think it’s going to do from the moment it starts? AMERICAN HORROR STORY – DOUBLE FEATURE SERIES REVIEW

In it’s 10th season, “American Horror Story” decided to split its time between two completely different stories. The first to air was “Red Tide”, which followed a writer (Finn Wittrock) and his wife (Lily Rabe) and child who move out temporarily to a seaside town during the off season so he can try to get some writing in, when some colorful and famous writer locals (Frances Conroy & Evan Peters) turn him on to a pill that will make him the best writer he can be, but at a horrible and blood-soaked cost. The second tale, “Death Valley”, follows Dwight Eisenhower (Neal McDonough) and his wife (Sarah Paulson) as they deal quite differently with the new world they had no choice but to approve of in the wake of Roswell and their dealings with the aliens who landed. Chris, Robert, Melina, and Justin had mixed feelings about this season, namely that part one was somewhat good to not good at all and part two was just plain awful. Bradly Martin (Screener Squad, Eye on the Prize, Breakfast Pub)

Bradly Martin was born in the united states and grew up on a healthy diet of sports, films, and books. A rather shy lad who kept to himself, Bradly soon discovered the best way to know a person was to know what people liked. Throughout the years Bradly became a fan of many things and a fanatic of none. From Doctor Dre, to Doctor Strange and the who’s who of Whos. From Playstation to the Dreamcast and Marvel to DC. From LeBron James to James Bond and Lord of the Rings to Lord Palmerston (or Pitt the Elder if you agree with Wade Boggs) and is a huge fan of dad jokes and randomly obscure Simpsons references. Michael Riojas (Screener Squad, Highly Suspect Reviews)

The man with the ever-changing nicknames. Born in Austin, Riojas was rocketed to Del Rio, Texas, a literal small ville. In his youth, he was bitten by a radioactive… okay, look. Mike is not very good at this whole “talking about himself” thing. But he has been so obsessed with comics, video games, and anime since childhood- that if one has to choose between listening to Joe Quesada or Mike over any obscure Spider-Man trivia, they go to him (or, at least Martin Thomas once said so). He is also a big fan of “Ghostbusters” (he even owns his own jumpsuit and two, that’s right, TWO proton packs!), collects toys and video games, and will defend “Superman IV: The Quest for Peace” if provoked.

One of the world’s most popular anime series has returned with another thrilling, well-animated, and definitely canonical movie.  The plot follows Izuku Midoriya (Justin Briner/Daiki Yamashita) and his fellow U.A. classmates as they join the world’s Pro-Heroes to stop a new threat. A mysterious terrorist group called Humarize, led by their enigmatic leader Flect Turn (Robbie Daymond/Kazuya Nakai), are utilizing the Trigger serum into weapons of mass destruction that can decimate the Quirk user population of an entire city. After being framed for a crime he didn’t commit during the investigation, Midoriya must team up with a teen con-artist named Rody (Ryan Colt Levy/Ryo Yoshizawa) to foil the terrorists’ planned global attack before it’s too late. Following a divisive fan reaction to the show’s most recent season, does this movie help rejuvenate what makes “My Hero Academia” so special? Justin’s fate as a movie fanatic was written in the stars when his birth forced his parents to cancel their planned Oscar viewing party. While growing up in California, he was often seen in front of the television watching and re-watching Star Wars, Jurassic Park, classic Disney movies and a steady stream of animated shows. This eventually led to a B.A. in Film at Brigham Young University and an Outstanding Student Teacher Award for displaying a level of film knowledge so insane that even his fellow film students couldn’t compete. He received his M.A. from Syracuse University and is currently pursuing a teaching certificate, but still volunteers at One of Us every so often for the fun of it. Michael Riojas (Screener Squad, Highly Suspect Reviews)

The man with the ever-changing nicknames. Born in Austin, Riojas was rocketed to Del Rio, Texas, a literal small ville. In his youth, he was bitten by a radioactive… okay, look. Mike is not very good at this whole “talking about himself” thing. But he has been so obsessed with comics, video games, and anime since childhood- that if one has to choose between listening to Joe Quesada or Mike over any obscure Spider-Man trivia, they go to him (or, at least Martin Thomas once said so). He is also a big fan of “Ghostbusters” (he even owns his own jumpsuit and two, that’s right, TWO proton packs!), collects toys and video games, and will defend “Superman IV: The Quest for Peace” if provoked. He lives in Austin with his beloved Dachshund-Maltese and trusted sidekick, Dean.

LAST NIGHT IN SOHO MOVIE REVIEW

Director/writer Edgar Wright (“Shaun of the Dead”) returns with a different type of film from what he’s known for: a downright serious horror film. Thomasin McKenzie plays Ellie, a fresh-faced and excited young lady just starting at a prestigious fashion college in London. After some unpleasantness from cliquey dorm students, she finds off-campus housing and all seems wonderful as she starts having luxurious dreams at night where she’s in the body of a promising ingenue singer in the 60s named Sandy (Anya Taylor-Joy). All the 60’s fashion and music inspires her, she starts making her teachers happy with her designs, and who cares what the cliquey girls think? But then, the dreams start to turn into nightmares as Sandy’s life becomes hellish and Ellie starts to realize that it may not be just dreams she’s experiencing but the actual past, and it starts to penetrate horrifyingly into her waking life. Chris, Frank, Alan, and Wright had nothing but glowing praise for this new chapter in Edgar Wright’s career. Listen to them marvel.

Christopher Lawrence Cox (Founder, Da Boss)

Born in the wilds of northern Virginia, Chris managed to put all of his survival skills to use and barely escaped with his life to Austin Texas in 1992 where ever since he’s dabbled in everything from plumber’s assistant to sandwich maker, from band to bar management. An opportunity to see theatrical release films for free by becoming a critic on a local public access show called “The Reel Deal” turned into a full-time job when Chris and his friends decided to take it to the internet. They built the site Spill.com, adding multiple podcasts and animated features, to no small amount of success. During this time, a fortuitous friendship sprung up between Chris and young Brian Salisbury, who was also a local film critic, and they merged their forces of will, and their laundry list of ideas for shows, to eventually build this community of critics. While Brian eventually followed his heart to a new family, Chris continues on with a cast of colorful folks from all over the country (and a few others).
