BREAKING MOVIE REVIEW

This is a true story. The morning of July 7, 2017, a 33-year-old black man and Marine Corps veteran named Brian Brown Easley walked into a suburban Wells Fargo Bank on Windy Hill Road in Atlanta, Georgia. He wore a grey hoodie and carried a backpack. He walked up to the teller, asked to withdraw a few dollars, and then handed her a simple note that said: I have a bomb.” He never raised his voice. He never hurt anyone. He wasn’t robbing the bank. He wanted the manager to clear the building out and call 911. He wanted to speak to a negotiator. He had one demand: He wanted the $892 he was owed in disability from the Department of Veterans Affairs. By the end of the day, Brian was dead. John Boyega plays Lance Corporal Easely in this very small but very poignant film, and proves that he is one hell of a fine actor. Jena, Chad, Wright, and T.C. have a solemn conversation in praise of this film and with heartbreaking respect to this very sad and all-too-real American story.

The newest latest season of Westworld gets back to the gestating ideas of season one without skimping on the action of season three. Every human cell is replaced after seven years. The fourth season picks up the story exactly seven years later, a telling sign for the future of humanity. It’s the year 2060. You’re dead. They’re not. Yet. Time jumps resume in Nolan-esque fashion and the result is surprisingly emotional, especially if you have kids…or a Roomba that you’ve developed a connection with since the pandemic. Host Wright Sulek and guests Jena Perry and Drew Tinnin break down the new season without too many spoilers about the future fate of humanity. This season was for Westworld fans and it’s a much needed course correction as we take the train ride into the fifth and final season.

SPIN ME ROUND MOVIE REVIEW

Writer/director Jeff Baena, whose previous work includes the comedies The Little Hours and Life after Beth, returns to transport us to the enchanted Italian countryside where romance and wonder lie in wait…well, that’s certainly what all the travelogues say, right? Starring and co-written by Alison Brie, Spin Me Round tells the story of Amber, a young manager for an Italian chain restaurant (essentially Olive Garden) whose life takes an unexpected turn when she is accepted to an employee training program in Italy. Yearning for adventure and the possibility of true love, Amber is soon introduced to the company’s dashing and mysterious CEO Nick Martucci (Alessandro Nivola) who may just be the man of Amber’s dreams. But upon stepping into his world of yachts, villas and lavish parties, Amber soon comes to suspect that all may not be as it seems. If this sounds like the plot of your typical harlequin romantic thriller, trust me…the movie knows that. Boasting an all-star cast including Aubrey Plaza, Molly Shannon, Tim Heidecker and Zach Woods, Spin Me Round is as wacky and hilarious as one would expect with such a comedy lineup. But does it pack the satirical punch of Baena’s previous work? Well, that’s what Brad, Rose, Melina and Frank came together to discuss.

Bradly Martin was born in the united states and grew up on a healthy diet of sports, films, and books. BETTER CALL SAUL SEASON 6 REVIEW

14 years ago, Vince Gilligan and his wonderful crew introduced TV audiences around the world to the Breaking Bad Universe and with the sixth and final season of Better Call Saul it finally comes to a close. At first, the kooky, over-the-top lawyer Saul Goodman seemed to be nothing more than simple comic relief in Breaking Bad, but creators Peter Gould and Vince Gilligan masterfully showed the humanity and inner turmoil of the man underneath–Jimmy McGill, over the last six seasons. In this final season, Jimmy McGill and Kim Wexler plan to pull one big scam out of spite on their rival Howard Hamlin. What they don’t realize is how it will irrevocably change their lives and their relationship forever. If you can’t already tell, this crew really enjoyed it. You could even say that it was quite a ride. In this spoiler-free review, Rose, Wright, Bradly, and Ryan dive into Jimmy’s last dance and don their gaudiest, most colorful formal wear for the occasion. It’s showtime!

Well-rounded nerd and artist, Tessa Morrison grew up in the misty mountains of West Virginia and was constantly ridiculed for being a “weirdo.” Then moved to Austin in 2009 where people said the same thing, but in an endearing tone. Tessa works an office day job, creates puppets and fiber art, cosplays, models for gaming and animation studios, and volunteers for various organizations. One of which is the Other Worlds Film Festival, Austin’s first SciFi film fest, working in the capacity of Outreach Director and programmer. Another is local DIY-comedy-wrestling league, Party World Rasslin’, where Tessa scrambles around stage-handing and doing art department nonsense. Hey you! Yes you, do you love that little scamp from Guardians of The Galaxy Vol 2, Baby Groot? Well guess what? I have 15 more minutes of hot, steamy, Groot shorts… Waiting to satisfy all of your Groot fantasies. There’s only five episodes and they’re very short, but I Am Groot packs a lot into what little the show actually delivers on. The main flaws with I Am Groot comes with how Disney+ represents it on the platform. It’s not bundled together and is hard to search for, nor is it the only show that suffers from this same issue on Disney’s streaming platform. Chad Halvorsen currently resides in Milwaukee, WI, where he produces and edits commercials, films, and everything in between. He was always a fan of film/television growing up, spending days in the Summer, making (terrible) home movies with his brothers. Little did he know that passion would carry on into adulthood. Harmoni is a mermaid-haired, millennial, rum drinking, Section 31, Slytherin (who’s divorced J.K. Rowling) preschool/nursery teacher and multi genre geek who also loves all things film, tv, fashion, makeup, and an embarrassingly huge BTS stan. Like really embarrassing. As in, mention them and then sit back and watch the insanity. Harmoni likes being able to game and talk movies/TV with people that aren’t 3 feet tall or all that demanding of her. Born in Boston, then ending up in Dallas, Texas in the early 2000s, Ben has always had a passion for film. He started in film school not long after where he launched MovieReelizations.com where he still writes reviews to this day. He’s since moved to Austin where he has been also hopping on podcasts and both editing and shooting videos for One of Us. A fan of films from almost all genres, and many that predate him more than makes sense, he is anything if not eclectic in what he’s watching at any point. INU-OH MOVIE REVIEW

The anime Inu-Oh directed by Masaaki Yuasa (Japan Sinks: 2020, Devilman Crybaby, Ride your Wave) is back to up the razzle and double the dazzle with a through the centuries rock opera about government controlled narratives being thwarted by the power of music. Hey Jude! You hear about the new biwa rock band raging against the emperor of Japan? The songwriter and biwa player Tomona is the keeper of the Heike histories. With a pick, his mighty axe, and mad writing skills, he’s on a quest to give the people their history back.  But this isn’t a solo act.  Inu-Oh, the deformed dog king frontman, exorcises the ghosts of the past using his incredible dancing to break on through to the other side. The feudal lords and shogun want to silence this new movement, of course. The Emperor’s trifflin’ ass should let it be and realize you can’t always get what you want oh but you get what you need.  Bradly, Harmoni, Ben, and Lewayne tune their guitars, check their mics, and spread their love of glam rock while discuss the complicated relationship between concerts and convoluted ongoing epic narratives.

Bradly Martin was born in the united states and grew up on a healthy diet of sports, films, and books. CARTER MOVIE REVIEW

Okay, we’re going to give you the synopsis of the plot, but let’s be clear here. It doesn’t matter. Seriously, “plot” isn’t why anyone would watch this movie. In the midst of a deadly pandemic caused by a virus which makes the infected patients violent and zombie-like, originating from the Korean DMZ that has already devastated the United States and North Korea, a man wakes up in a blood-soaked bed in a motel room in Seoul. He is intruded upon by armed CIA agents who threaten him asking the whereabouts of a Dr. Jung Byung-ho. With no recollections of his past, he doesn’t know who he is or why he is there, let alone who Dr. Jung is. A female voice inside his ear, which only he can hear, tells him that his name is Carter and he needs to follow her instructions if he wants to live. Following the voice, he escapes the room and begins a nearly nonstop bloody fight across the city, into the air, and into North Korea, confronting hundreds who try to kill him but he survives thanks to his extraordinary fighting and killing skills. There, that’s the premise. But what this movie really is is a fight scene, a gunfight scene, another fight scene, a car chase scene, a fight with cars and guns, fight, fight, another gun fight, another one with knives, and another one with guns, and a car chase, and a fight-fight-fight-fight. Bored yet? Well, strap in with Harmoni, Sarah Jane, Lewayne, and T.C., because this thing is over TWO HOURS LONG, and this is pretty much the whole movie. Anyway, more fighting, a fight with guns, fist fight, there’s a helicopter involved in one, fight, and fight, and roll credits. The Squad loves a good action flick, but they are hard pressed to call this one “good”, or even a movie. Maybe a video game, but not a movie.
