THE FORGIVEN MOVIE REVIEW

A wealthy collection of bored elites gather out in the Moroccan desert for a party thrown by a snarky couple (Matt Smith and Caleb Landry Jones) but there’s a problem. One couple (Ralph Fiennes and Jessica Chastain) while on their way to the location accidentally hit a local boy on the road and kill him. Taking the body with them back to the party, which is generally not a good way to liven things up, leads to the father of the boy coming there and requesting that Fiennes comes back with him to his home, as this is ‘the way things are done here’. Fiennes agrees and leaves with him and another man (Saïd Taghmaoui) on a very long desert journey with an uncertain moral destination. Meanwhile the party keeps going, for whatever that’s worth. And generally speaking, Chris, Frank, Alan, and Marco didn’t think it was worth much: the party half of the movie, anyway. But still, any movie by John Michael McDonagh (The Guard, Calvary) is well worth a look and although our reviewers didn’t all agree on The Forgiven, it certainly led to a spirited discussion about it.

STAR TREK: STRANGE NEW WORLDS REVIEW

Star Trek has had a lot of different iterations since the original series, many films, spin-offs, but it always comes back to the Starship Enterprise. The latest Trek show, Strange New Worlds, focuses on some characters from the original 60s series, and these new actors playing them were introduced in Star Trek: Discovery. Now, with Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) commanding the Enterprise, they go back to the format of weekly adventures. This isn’t Kirk’s Enterprise to be sure, but we do have Spock (Ethan Peck), Uhura (Celia Rose Gooding), Nurse Chapel (Jess Bush) with the hint of more original series characters to come. The story has Pike haunted by a detailed premonition of his fate, originally seen in the 1966 two-parter “The Menagerie”. But adventures will not wait and the crew face up against a much more terrifying version of the Gorn, space pirates, new aliens, alternate realities, warring Romulans, and more. Chris, TC, Jordan, and Eliot engage and hit it.

Eleven and her friends are back facing up against a new threat from the Upside Down but this time they are at a severe disadvantage. Eleven and her new family have moved to California (who wouldn’t leave Hawkins after everything) and she has lost her powers. Hopper is trapped in a gulag in Russia and time is running out before they sacrifice him and other prisoners to their pet monsters, and a mysterious new force is killing teens in Hawkins brutally. BAYMAX! SERIES REVIEW

Based off of 2014’s Big Hero 6, Baymax! is a new series streaming on Disney+. It stars, you guessed it, Baymax, a loveable robot with a penchant for helping others in need. The series is only 6 episodes long and strung together, will take about an hour to watch. It’s not a lot of content, but what you get is definitely worth it. Some familiar faces like Aunt Cass and Hiro make an appearance, but the show focuses on new characters, and some of the challenges they face day-to-day. Like any new content that tries to appeal to a more diverse audience, Baymax! comes with some scandal… There’s a trans person represented on screen for like 2 seconds… THE HORROR! Follow along as Harmoni, Dogget, Tessa, and Chad talk about the woke libs at Disney, and their secret plot to make every child in the world trans, because that’s definitely a thing in 2022 we should all be worried about. Stupid Disney being “woke.” Counterpoint; see Disney’s greatest woke classics like Dumbo (the “Jim” crows), Peter Pan (cultural appropriation/stereotypes), or Song of the South (Lost Cause Propaganda).

Oh, and there’s an apocalyptic event that threatens to kill everyone, and everything. Again. Mindy, Jena, Jordan, and Marcos all come together to discuss how this new season stacks up with the previous two, what did and didn’t work, more time travel shenanigans, Elliot Page’s transition on and off-screen, and just what exactly is a Kugelblitz?

THE PRINCESS MOVIE REVIEW

It’s a tale as old as time. You’ve got your kingdom far, far away. You’ve got your once upon a time. You’ve got a strong-willed princess locked away in the tallest tower of the castle. She’s been placed there against her will after refusing to wed a cruel, sociopathic Prince. She wakes in the remote tower of her father’s castle to discover her vindictive suitor has raided the realm and is now intent on taking her father’s throne. The princess must save the kingdom. We’ve been here many times before. But, what this princess has that those other princesses did not is the ability to wield a sword like some sort of fairy tale John Wick. Joey King (from Netflix’s The Kissing Booth) plays the titular Princess and brandishes swords, while jump-kicking, throat punching, and slicing limbs on her way from the top of the tower to the bottom in a reverse The Raid, but in a castle, with a cute, unsuspectingly capable heroine, all in the bloody quest to save her family from the mustache twirling, Prince Julius (Dominic Cooper). Along the way, she has to fight through countless men and Julius’ lieutenant, the whip-wielding Moira (Olga Kurylenko). Rae, Lewayne and T.C. have fun raiding the castle themselves and find as much as they can to say about this 90 minute fight scene with a razor thin plot.

T.C. De Witt is a multi-awarded writer/director originally from Wisconsin and now based in Los Angeles. His life has been devoted to the arts since he was a child. He is now a professional screenwriter and has been thriving for the past decade, regularly offering his talents to production studios in LA, Chicago, Milwaukee, and internationally in Sydney and Poland. Beavis and Butthead Do The Universe is like, I don’t know, a spiritual successor to Beavis and Butthead Do America. Your favorite Gen X’ers have somehow made it to space, and like, find a black hole or something. Heh… I just said “hole.” Now stranded in the stupid year of 2022, Beavis and Butthead must travel across time and space to like um, score. You know, because that’s all teenagers ever thinks about… their wieners. Today we have Jena, Rose, Ryan and Chad… 4 idiots who are ready to set this review on fire!

THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER MOVIE REVIEW

You’re Thor? I’m so thor from laughing I can barely breathe. That was pretty much Chris, Danni, and Wright’s reaction to Taika Waititi’s follow-up to his wonderful (sorry haters) Thor: Ragnarok. Now with Asgard on Earth being run by Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson) as a tourist attraction and Thor taking on jobs with the Guardians of the Galaxy, everything seems chill. But wait…there’s this guy Gorr (Christian Bale) who has got ahold of a powerful God-killing weapon and is putting it to work across the universe. Thor has to leave his merry band of space mercenaries and go look into it. Meanwhile on Earth, Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) has stage 4 cancer with no hope seemingly in sight until she feels a call from Asgard summoning her to the broken hammer Mjolnir… While this latest entry might fall too hard on the goofy side for some, it was pure pleasure for our reviewers. THE FIRST LADY SERIES REVIEW

As the old saying goes: behind every successful man is a great woman telling him to move the hell over…I may be paraphrasing slightly. Showtime’s newest limited series weaves together the stories of three iconic women: Eleanor Roosevelt (Gillian Anderson), Betty Ford (Michelle Pfeiffer) and Michelle Obama (Viola Davis), all of whom would hold the distinguished title of the First Lady over the course of their lives. Throughout The First Lady’s 10 episode run, Roosevelt, Ford and Obama struggle to navigate the obligations of their position while staying true to their personal and political convictions. The show explores their storied careers in the political arena as well as their young adult lives, the evolution of their marriages, and the many events that would forever shape their passionate worldviews. Boasting a massive supporting cast including Kiefer Sutherland, O-T Fagbenle, Aaron Eckhart, Lily Rabe, Dakota Fanning, Ellen Burstyn and Jackie Earle Haley, The First Lady seeks to tell the stories of these historical women with as thorough a brush as possible. But despite the massive talent involved (onscreen and off), does this series ultimately succeed as an effective biopic? Bradly Martin was born in the united states and grew up on a healthy diet of sports, films, and books. A rather shy lad who kept to himself, Bradly soon discovered the best way to know a person was to know what people liked. Frank Calvillo (Highly Suspect Reviews, Screener Squad)

Born and raised in South Texas, Frank currently lives in Austin and has been in love with movies ever since his father showed him some Three Stooges shorts when he was five years old. Today he loves all kinds of film, regardless of era, country, budget or genre. He believes every film has an audience and is at least one person’s favorite movie.

THE LONG NIGHT MOVIE REVIEW

A lot of things can ruin a romantic couple’s getaway weekend: Anxiety from the deep seclusion, personal injury through your own awkward clumsiness, or having the same old fight with your guy or gal. The worst though would have to be a cult gathering in the front lawn in the middle of the night chanting a prophecy of impending doom all garbed in robes and antlered masks. Director Rich Ragsdale and everyone’s favourite horror streaming service Shudder presents The Long Night. Grace s (Scout Taylor-Compton) a foster kid who never knew her biological mom and dad  has just been contacted by a mysterious stranger who promises information about her real parents. He promises all the answers she seeks and will spill all the beans at his home in the deep dark woods. Jack (Nolan Gerard Funk) sees it as an opportunity to kill two birds with one stone with a possible family reunion and an absolutely sexy time getaway with this bae. The vacation takes a bizarre turn when Wayne (Jeff Fahey) shows up at the promising location demanding to know what this couple is doing trespassing on private property.  Tensions climb even higher when hooded figures surround and invade the premises.  Grace, Jack, and Wayne set aside their confusion and paranoia in order to Survive The Long Night.  Bradly, Lewayne, Rae, and Jordan hunker down and discuss the best way to survive a home invasion, the baggage of tropes that squat on the genre, and the overall greatness of Jeff Fahey.

Lewayne’s earliest memories are of watching movies and reading comics, which instilled in him a sense of wonder, a vivid imagination, and unrealistic expectations. It also means he spends a lot of time watching movies, writing scripts for them, and trying to get them made. He lives in the middle of middle America after landing there as a child, and has remained there mainly because he hates packing.
