THREE THOUSAND YEARS OF LONGING MOVIE REVIEW

In Director/Co-writer George Miller’s first film since 2015’s Max Max: Fury Road, he traverses a very different path with Three Thousand Years of Longing. Tilda Swinton plays Alithea, a narratologist (the study of narrative and narrative structure and the ways that these affect human perception) who is on a lecture tour in Istanbul. She purchases an odd glass container and lo and behold: it contains a Djinn. The initially hugely oversized Idris Elba appears in her hotel room and grants her three wishes. Now, Alithea is a student of tales and is all too familiar with how wishes, if not phrased exactly correctly, can go awry. As well, she is very content with her life and wants for nothing. But the Djinn has tales to tell and a tragic existence of regularly not getting folks to use all three of their wishes, which means continued imprisonment for him till he can convince someone to do the hat trick. Their conversation explores famous historical figures, tales of magic, love, and loss, and the question: can he convince Alithea to make her wishes and set him free? Chris, Alan, Marco, and Drew watched this colorful and intelligent Gaimanesque tale and had some thoughts.

Born in the wilds of northern Virginia, Chris managed to put all of his survival skills to use and barely escaped with his life to Austin Texas in 1992 where ever since he’s dabbled in everything from plumber’s assistant to sandwich maker, from band to bar management. While Brian eventually followed his heart to a new family, Chris continues on with a cast of colorful folks from all over the country (and a few others).
