Text: Romans 7:7-12

God's law is good, but sin twists what God intended for good, revealing our need for a Savior who can do what the law cannot.
The Law Is Not Sin (v. 7)
-The law exposes sinful desires, not just sinful actions.
-The law reveals what can remain hidden beneath outward obedience.
Sin Is the Problem (vv. 8–11)
-Sin exploits God’s good commands to stir up rebellion (vv. 8–9).
-Sin deceives us about where life is found and ultimately leads to death (vv. 10–11).
The Law Is Good (v. 12)
-The law is holy and righteous because it reflects God's character.
-The law is good because it reveals our sin and points us to our need for a Savior.

Here, he uses marriage as an illustration to show that dying with Christ and finding life in His name inevitably produces righteous living and freedom from rule-keeping.
Death changes the nature of relationships.
Those who treasure Jesus die to the hope of saving ourselves through rule keeping.
Those who treasure Jesus continue to live righteously through the Holy Spirit.

Paul wants to make it clear that the direction of your life matters. Sin takes us toward death, but God frees us from sin and gives us a new way to live. Eternal life is His gift, not something we earn. Inevitably, if we have genuine faith in Christ, we will joyfully obey God.
What Sin pays is Death.
What God gifts is Life.

Paul wants it to be unmistakably clear: our attitudes and actions matter for our
eternal destiny. If our lives don’t show that God is master of our daily lives, we should
not be confident we belong to him. Inevitably, faith in Jesus and commitment to Him are
inseparable. Sin may have influence, but not authority. He writes to empower us in our
battle with sin.
1. You can serve God or sin.
2. God Changed our Hearts.
3. We used to serve sin; now we happily obey God.
4. Passionately Pursue Righteousness.

Since we have been brought from death to life, we can live by the grace that sets us free.
1. Stop Letting Sin Call the Shots (Romans 6:12)
- Sin still exists and will continue to tempt us, but it does not make our decisions for us.
- Getting rid of sin does not happen automatically. It is a fight we need to enter into.
2. Pay Attention to What You Are Handing Over (Romans 6:13)
- We no longer submit ourselves to sin and instead offer ourselves to God.
3. Sin Will Not Be Your Master (Romans 6:14)
- Sin will not rule over you because we are under grace.
- Sin will still tempt us, but it no longer gets to own us.

Paul AGAIN wants us to grasp that our dying with Christ gives us confidence
in a future resurrection; we will rise from the dead, and clarity about the depth of our
union with Christ, which will inevitably empower us to overthrow the control of sin in our lives.
...The Resurrection, Christ’s indestructible life, secures our future and provides
unbelievable hope (v8-10).
...Our union with Christ transforms our life, our present; sin no longer has the same
authority over us (v5-7).

Big Idea: How can a righteous God declare unrighteous people
righteous without compromising His own righteous character? In Romans, Paul writes to
the church, those who treasure Jesus, to unpack just how deep the root of sin is and
give an ever-expanding appreciation and enjoyment of how great the grace of God is
that destroys it.
...Everyone is guilty of sinning against God. Everyone is unrighteous.
Everyone is without excuse. God’s problem is not solved because people
are actually righteous. (1:18-3:20)
...The only solution is Jesus. For God to maintain His holy righteous
character, He, and He alone had to solve the problem of our sin. Jesus the
judge is also the justifier. There is no one else. There is no other way. (3:21-26)
...Faith and faith alone in Jesus is all that is needed and is all that will work.
Because Jesus is the only solution, we must genuinely trust in Jesus.

Big Idea: Anxiety is an inevitable experience that reveals the depth of fear in the human heart, but also an opportunity to allow God to cultivate inward peace founded on truth.
...reveals the inner turmoil of the heart.
...is an opportunity for inward change.
...can only be combated with new truth.

Big Idea: Meaningful JESUS-saturated friendships don't happen accidentally; they are
cultivated intentionally because God designed us to experience the joy of Jesus,
together.
Give the Gift of Presence (proximity).
Drop the Water Line (trust).
Consistency Multiplied over Time (usually over food).
Invest Before You Need Them (slow down).

Big Idea: Things and people in this life will cause hurt; healing begins when we honestly bring our wounded hearts to God’s wisdom instead of allowing our hurt to shape our lives.
Name the Hurt.
Reject Counterfeit Healing.
Receive God’s Healing.
Reflect God’s Healing.
