Hintlesham Badger episodes

  • Episode 4: Heroes, Hotels and History

This month the Badger snuffles out the low down on events coming to the village in the run up to Christmas.

We focus especially on Hintlesham Hall which will host possibly the largest event the village has ever seen when thousands are expected to attend the Suffolk County Christmas Fair in November. This month's Hintlesham Hero is Jack Gant who quit his job as a shepherd in the village to work as a farm labourer in Australia. He also won the Military Medal for gallantry while serving with the Australian Infantry. It’s a remarkable story.

Jack attended the village school where Emma Burgess is Headteacher. We meet Emma to hear about the joys and challenges of being the boss of our Victorian school. She claims to be an Ipswich Town faithful but also a Norwich City traitor!

Social life in Hintlesham and Chattisham is waking up after the dog days of the summer.

There is the tale of how The Badger went for a bike ride to Constable Country and how he reached Flatford whilst his bike is en route to Ghana in West Africa.

If you’re lucky you’ll be able to scoff your way through Autumn with cake at every turn. This month The Badger snuffles out some great events you won’t want to miss with familiar local voices inviting you to get involved.

The Hintlesham Badger is presented and produced by former BBC broadcaster, Gerald Main.

  • Episode 2: Friends and Neighbors

This month the Badger catches up with a Hintlesham woman who has lived in the same house for over 80 years , and equally remarkable Les Cole who leads the Parish Council but has never been driven to drink.

The Badger also meets former BBC radio presenter and country singer Steve Cherelle. Steve is appearing in concert at the Community Hall in support of the Community Opposition Group which is campaigning against the building of a housing estate adjacent to Timperleys and Duke Street.

This month’s 'Hintlesham Hero' was killed in 1942 and for over 50 years his death was an official secret. It’s the story of how a British submarine torpedoed an Italian ship transporting prisoners of war from North Africa to Sicily, resulting in more than 800 deaths.
