Ian Wood  draws much of his inspiration from wildlife and the natural world, whilst also helping to raise essential funds, for a number of related charities, such as The Jane Goodall Institute. Arts section writer Mia. L talks to the acclaimed artist Jaye Ho, about her latest exhibition The Vanishing Act (running from the 6th of October-22nd of November 2020), as hosted by The Onca Gallery in Brighton.

Born in Oxford to Singaporean and Malaysian parents, Jaye discusses her career as a mixed media artist, alongside her role working within the Human Rights sector, of the U.K Foreign and Commonwealth Office. Jaye's exhibition The Vanishing Act encompasses many vital themes including gender discrimination, sexual violence and the hidden atrocities of war, from both a personal and socio-political perspective. Widely exhibited, with work highly regarded both nationally and internationally, Hastings-based artist Jaye Ho is truly a woman of our times.

Andrew Colquhoun of the Friends of Hastings Country Park Nature Reserve reflects back over the pleasures nature provides during the difficult times of the COVID-19 pandemic, sharing his early morning walks. Enjoy reflecting on this evocative reflection he paints of the joys of nature in the park that is just on our doorstep. Perhaps one aspect of a dreadful pandemic is the “golden gift of time, to be as well as to do.”

In this edition of Nature Notes, Stephanie Donaldson from the Friends of Hastings Country Park Nature Reserve, discusses some of the more unusual and interesting plants to be found there at this time of the year.  In case the name is unfamiliar, 'the ghylls' that she refers to are the seasonal streams running down the glens.

If you are going to follow her plant guide on your own walks in the Park, do make sure you follow her advice about observing the hemlock water dropwort from a distance - it's very poisonous!
