A Bigger View of God: Faith, Sovereignty, Providence & Knowing God the Father
What if your biggest struggle with faith isn’t that you have too little faith—but that you have too small a view of God?
In this powerful biblical teaching, we explore who God is, what God is like, and how our understanding of God shapes our faith, suffering, salvation, prayer, and relationship with Him.
Scripture must be the foundation for what we believe about God. Our experiences matter, but our experiences must always be measured against the truth God has revealed through His Word.
We examine the attributes of God, including His sovereignty, providence, eternality, holiness, justice, mercy, love, and grace. More than simply understanding God as an all-powerful Creator, we consider what it means to know Him as a personal Father who calls, redeems, and adopts His people through Jesus Christ.
A Too-Small View of God
One of the central challenges of this teaching is recognizing that we may not have a faith problem—we may have a God problem because our understanding of Him is too small.
When circumstances become overwhelming, it is easy to focus on what we can see instead of the God who created all things, sustains all things, and works according to His purposes.
The story of Joseph in Genesis gives us a powerful picture of the providence of God. Joseph could not see the entire picture while he was living through betrayal, slavery, injustice, and suffering. Yet God was working through circumstances that were ultimately accomplishing His purposes.
What Is Biblical Faith?
We also examine what the Bible actually teaches about faith in God.
Faith is not a force we accumulate. It isn't something we store up or use to make circumstances happen. Biblical faith has an object: God Himself.
Our confidence is not ultimately found in how strong our faith feels. Our confidence rests in the character, faithfulness, power, and promises of God.
The stronger our understanding of God becomes, the more clearly we can see why He is worthy of our trust.
Questions to Consider
✝️ Is my understanding of God shaped by Scripture or by my experiences and preferences?
📖 Am I allowing God's Word to define who God truly is?
🙏 Is my faith actually in God—or am I putting my faith in faith?
🌎 What does God's sovereignty mean when I face suffering, uncertainty, or circumstances I cannot understand?
❤️ Do I understand God as a loving Father who has adopted me through Christ?
🔥 How does knowing God's character change the way I live, pray, trust, and persevere?
Ultimately, this teaching is an invitation to know God more deeply, see Him more clearly, and trust Him more completely.
There is no limit to the riches of God's character. We can spend a lifetime studying who God is and never exhaust the greatness of His being.
But the more clearly we see who God is, the more confidently we can trust Him.
God is greater than your circumstances, greater than your fears, and greater than the limitations of your understanding.
