His Spirit & Our Spirit

Listen Later

Terry Law went home to be with the Lord on August 31, 2020. Before his death, Terry and Scot spent many, many hours together discussing deep spiritual truths from scripture and recording this Conversations podcast. Although Terry is no longer with us, he has left us a profound inheritance - how to hear the voice of God. We will, in honor of the greatest man we have ever known and had the privilege of calling “Dad” continue to allow Terry to speak. In this episode, Terry unpacks how to hear the voice of God.

The following is an outline of this Conversations podcast to follow along and to study.

If there’s ever a time we need to hear from God, it’s now.

Luke 4:1-14 reads:
Then Jesus, being filled with the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spiritinto the wilderness, being tempted for forty days by the devil. And in those days He ate nothing, and afterward, when they had ended, He was hungry. And the devil said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, command this stone to become bread.”
But Jesus answered him, saying, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.’”
Then the devil, taking Him up on a high mountain, showed Him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time. And the devil said to Him, “All this authority I will give You, and their glory; for this has been delivered to me, and I give it to whomever I wish. Therefore, if You will worship before me, all will be Yours.”
And Jesus answered and said to him, “Get behind Me, Satan! For it is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only you shall serve.’ ”
Then he brought Him to Jerusalem, set Him on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down from here.  For it is written: ‘He shall give His angels charge over you,
To keep you,’ and, ‘In their hands they shall bear you up, Lest you dash your foot against a stone.’ ”
And Jesus answered and said to him, “It has been said, ‘You shall not tempt the Lord your God.’” Now when the devil had ended every temptation, he departed from Him until an opportune time.
Then Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit to Galilee, and news of Him went out through all the surrounding region.

When Jesus followed the Holy Spirit into the wilderness, he went FULL of the Holy Spirit. When he came out of the wilderness, he began his earthly ministry “EMPOWERED by the Holy Spirit.” The Holy Spirit led both Jesus and Satan into the desert for 40 days. Jesus fasted and overcame all of Satan’s temptations by speaking these words: “IT IS WRITTEN.” The 40 days of temptation and overcoming sin by speaking the word of God, empowered Jesus, and put Satan in his proper place.
Many Christians will say they are filled with the Holy Spirit, but lack his power. There is a deeper place we need to go in our walks with God. It is not enough to only be filled with the Holy Spirit. We also need to speak the word of God when temptations and thought attacks come. The spoken word of God empowers us. We are to live full of the Holy Spirit AND empowered to do good works, just as Jesus did.
Romans 8:14-16 says, For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, “Abba,Father.”  The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God.
The Holy Spirit bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God. This is how we know we are born again, and that we are children of God. If we are born again, we have heard the voice of God. Many people confuse God’s voice. We think it should be an audible voice that we hear with our ears. That isn’t usually how it happens. We hear God through the Holy Spirit speaking to our spirits. God’s voice is a still, small voice heard by our spirits.
1 Thessalonians 5:23 says,  Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely; and may your whole
