After immigrating to the United States in 1866, Rabbi Gerechter moved around the Midwest and Northeast, working at various congregations. Eventually, he settled in Appleton, and began teaching alongside preaching. Gerechter was remembered by all as one who built communities through religion, academics, and day to day social interaction. Although Gerechter is only a footnote within greater Lawrence history, the community he helped build cherished him, and we should as well.
