Herman Webster Mudget of Gilmanton, NH was born May 16, 1861, the third of 5 kids. His parents were devout methodists. He was intelligent and graduated from Phillips Exeter Academy at the age of 16. He married well. Had a son. And in his spare time robbed graves to supply cadavers to medical professors and to commit insurance fraud. A polygamist, a conman, and America’s first serial killer, who built a home designed specifically to kill most efficiently in the middle of Chicago, IL. Did he killed 5 or 60 or several hundred? We might never know. But what we do know is that he killed men, women, and children. And he liked it.
